I can't believe all this is still going on. Thought it was dead and gone. Only thing I liked about this bill anyway was the family unity section, which would have spared us from having to file the I-601 (instead we would pay $2,000 and file the I-212 only) which would mean maybe Javier would be home in 2008 instead of 2009, but I doubt it will ever happen...

What is the word on yor case though Mel? Havent seen much regarding the issue since spring (politics.. go figure.. smoke n mirrors) so am not sure where things are standing atm.

Immigration pushed aside as House GOP sticks to border security priorities

By Michael Doyle

WASHINGTON - Comprehensive immigration reform appears dead for the year, as House Republicans on Thursday announced plans to push ahead with border security measures and leave everything else for another time.

Facing a tight schedule and sharp divisions within their own ranks, GOP leaders will be sticking with border-enforcement priorities that can be passed before the November election.

"The intention of the House is to secure the borders," House Speaker Dennis Hastert said Thursday afternoon after meeting with his leadership team. "We need to find the things that we can do to secure the border, before we have a guest-worker program or any other kind of (legalization) program."

The specific proposals including new fencing, stiffer penalties and more Border Patrol agents will be aired next week. In an unusual public relations maneuver, House Republican leaders will sit and listen to testimony offered by the chairmen of House committees that held hearings in August.

The House plans to approve the border measures, some included in annual appropriations bills, before the scheduled Sept. 29 adjournment date.

"We need to solve first problems first," Hastert said.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Watch it, those are not the ONLY illegal immigrants, that are many that came here legally but have overstayed!

Other then that point, I agree they need to make the distinction that this is NOT an immigration issue but an ILLEGAL immigrantion issue.

Those who entered the country with inspection are not by federal definition Illegal immigrants, there are many cirumstances why people overstay some have family or health emergencies, ect..

Crossing the border illegally is different. Those who enter by sneaking over the border evading inspection,

Are Knowingly with intention commiting a FEDERAL CRIME! Their first ACT on American Soil is that of defiance, they should not be allowed any benefits or leniancy, majority of these illegal border crossers continue to commit crimes once on American soil, including violent crimes and crimes involving drugs,

look at the latest story involving an Illegal Drug smuggler who got away after an attempted arrest by broder patrol, who shot him in the ####### after he pointed an object at them. Now he is free given free medical care and the Border Agents are being charged criminally for doing their Job, they face 20 years in prison and An illegal Drug smuggler ( Child killer) goes free ?????

Agent Ramos risked his life defending us when he shot an illegal alien drug smuggler in the backside while patroling our border.

Ignacio “Nacho” Ramos is facing twenty years in prison, while the drug dealer he pursued gets immunity from his crimes.

Ramos, 37, and Compean, 30, are set to be sentenced next month for shooting Aldrete-Davila, a Mexican citizen, on Feb. 17, 2005, in the small town of Fabens, Texas, about 40 miles southeast of El Paso. Ramos said Aldrete-Davila pointed what he believed to be a gun at him. Ramos fired one shot. He did not know the single shot hit Aldrete-Davila in the buttocks because the smuggler kept running and disappeared into the brush along the Rio Grande.

Aldrete-Davila was later seen by agents at the scene getting into a van on the Mexican side of the border. He left behind a van filled with nearly 800 pounds of marijuana, worth more than $1 million. The U.S. Attorney's Office gave Aldrete-Davila immunity and free medical care at William Beaumont Army Medical Center for his testimony against the agents.

What has thE USC legal system come to, when our own border patrol agents can't not do their job with out feer of prosecution by our own legal system they defend!

Judging by the other story that seems to be pointless!

We filed the Advisory Opinion in December, it has now gotten lost twice. Just last week, Brian Hunt e-mailed our attorney and asked for another copy. In the meantime, we went and got married. In my way of thinking, the Department of State is not going to admit their mistake and give us the Advisory Opinion, so we're having to wait until August, 2008 to have our new medical exam and interview (now for the IR-1). At that interview, we'll have to file the I-601 and I-212 waivers, and from what I heard, it's taking about 6 months atm to get those approved, our attorney said to add a little time since a deportation in involved. All in all, I'm hoping he'll be home by mid-2009, but who knows what will happen between now and then?

Their hands are tied by policies coming down from Washington," he said.

"The Bush administration has imposed very severe guidelines on the activities of Border Patrol officers," Mehlman continued. "They are very limited in pursuing people that they catch coming across. They are not encouraged to pursue people. If they encounter them, that's fine."

Also this was interesting, referring to the 2 border patrol agents mentioned earlier:

willfully violating Aldrete-Davila's Fourth Amendment right to be free from unreasonable seizure

source

"It appears that the facts do not add up or justify the length of the sentences for these agents, let alone their conviction on multiple counts," Feinstein said. "Border agents often have a difficult and dangerous job in guarding our nation's borders. Undue prosecution of Border Patrol Agents could have a chilling effect on their ability to carry out their duties."

AND

"The Justice Department's outrageous prosecution does nothing but tie the hands of our Border Patrol and prevent them from securing America against a flood of illegal immigrants, drugs, counterfeit goods and, quite possibly, terrorists," Jones said in his letter to the president.

"This demoralizing prosecution puts the rights of illegal smugglers ahead of our homeland security and undermines the critical mission of better enforcing immigration laws. These two agents should not be made scapegoats for our government's enforcement failures."

If I move there it will take away from the argument of the hardship letter that goes along with the waivers, that I am unable to live in Mexico. I also could not afford to pay off my debts with a Mexican income. So, we just remain separate! :(

The trouble is that there are two sides to the government's face when it comes to illegal immigration. There's the side that wants votes, so makes noises about legislation (although nothing happens), and there's the side that likes its lawns mowed cheap and their businesses to get cheap labour, so have no reason to stem the tide.

There is no way to determine if The Drug smuggler indeed was pointing a weapon at border patrol agents so they were justified in their actions based on that alone, Anyone fleeing from a US border should be Aprehended at what ever cost, Why do Police chase 14 year old car thieves and Shoot them dead and Illegal Drug smuggling terrorists have more rights than our own USC & Legal residents???

They were doing their Job protecting our border! Another thing that really ticks me off is Criminal Drug smuggler is filing a law suit agaisnt the US for being shot? And US Attorneys are supporting this law suit. WHAT KIND of ####### is that!

These broder patrol agents should be givne a medal for doing their job and taking $1 million of illegal drugs off the streets, how many lives saved does that equate to?? The Drug smuggler , criminal, terrorist only was shot in the ####### he should have been shot point blank DEAD! at least then he wouldnt be suing US for our Border Patrol agents doing their Job.

I have no problem with immigration. done the correct way according to the laws established. true those need to be worked on, but it is done by citizens here of this country.... not illegal representation of other nationals here to dictate that.
