Clerical error on passport!

Hi VJ members!!! this makes us nervous both of us, we were not careful to review my wife's passport (the beneficiary) before mailing the biographic photocopy along with DS-230 and the other needed civil documents which have arrived to NVC today.

The problme is this, where it should be the surname, is her first name, and where should be her give name, (first and middle), it is written her middle name followed by the surname.......... I really feel stupid not noticing that and request a new passport from the issuing agency in Burundi.

So, what will happen at NVC? Are they going to ask us a new passport with names arranged/ written correctly? (as far as for spelling, the names are spelled correctly and other info such as birthdate, etc are correct). What are the odds? Are they going to close the case, and forward to embassy, while asking us to get the passpost right? or they will wait until we fix with them before sending the file to the consulate?

As of now, my wife has already surrended the passport to the issuing agency, and next week we are going to get another one which is correct. When we get that can we go ahead and send it to NVC, with the explanation?

Then am debating whether to go ahead and write the email to NVC right now to explain what we found. Or should I just wait until they review the documents?

Any one with the answers please we would like to know, at least so we can get some sleep!!!! lol!!!

It's not the same situation as yours but... My husband is from Mexico his passport had the wrong 'place of birth' they actually put the county instead of the town. We called the Consulate and they said we had to change it. Maybe they won't relize it. But if your worried I think you should call them asap

Thanks..... who should I call? The consulate? or email NVC to explain that we are going to use a different passport? or should I just wait until I hear from NVC? True, NVC may not realize it, but I strongly believe at the consulate when they see the actual passport, they will notice it and more likely to request another passport....... then will delay our process.... ooouugggghhhh!!!!!

So I understand that we need to request another passport, I think I should start next week by returning the passport to the issuing agency pointing out the error so that they can issue another one. Is this a good idea?

this is what I would do if I was in your situation: If the NVC has the copies of the incorrect passport. I would call them to let them know. If you have the passport get ahold of the passport agency asap let them know about the error so they can fix it. Then when you get the new passport make copies and switch them if you have a waiver. ( I have a hardship waiver that has copies of my husbands passport). The NVC may want copies of the newly issued passport. (im a us citizen, the passport agency screw up on both my passport card and passport. After I received them back all the numbers were different.)

If you wait and see if they'll over look the error, then they actually find it. It could dely your whole process, I would let them know and get everything changed ASAP.

Great and thanks a lot for help.... I will email NVC ASAP, I have been advised not to change the passport until NVC/consulate tells me to do so, but I can let them know of the situation. What waiver are you talking about? I didn't get that.... the waiver to switch the passport? Again thanks for your input.

My husband has to apply for a visa with a waiver. If you don't know about a waiver, then don't worry about it. You have to apply for a visa with a waiver when the benaficuary is in the United states illegally.

I did write the email to NVC, they replied last Friday that they haven't received the DS 230 package yet, and further instructions will be given to me once the package will be received and reviewed, now I check the NVC AVR it says that the case has been completed at NVC, to sit and wait for further instructions within eight weeks. Are they going to include the need to change the passport too?? I'm anxious, asking myself a thousand questions... what if... what if.....
