My fiancee has visited me twice in Nigeria and we so much in love with one another.we are yet to start the migration process basically bcos she is yet to obtain her citizenship status (she is originally from canada) and her oath swearing comes in May

Can we forge ahead with my migration process, since she would become American come Mid May.she had intended to start on May 1st.how long does the whole process take most especially from the home office in the states.

How long does the process take here in Nigeria

Are their cases of failed attempt at the USCIS office in the states and what are the reasons

Are their cases of failed interviews at the embassy here in Nigeria as well and what are the reasons

Is there some sort of documents that is required for successful application

Does it need to show financial capability with the application

Whats is the duration for the application process

I will be Glad to read an intensive answer to my questions as this would help us prepare adequately for my migration

The process takes about a year , a little longer with some males as they get hung up in AP ( additional checks). Most petitions go through the US without much trouble but Lagos is known for rejections on petty excuses. We had to file twice and there are a number of others that have been held back on their first time through. Most of the denials fall under lack of a bona fide relationship or wrong petiton . The first group is when the interviewer finds some petty reason the say you answered soemthing wrong and the second involves couples that have a traditional ceramony and file as fiances. Yes your girlfriend will have to show fiancial capability , probably about 20k next year.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Welcome to VJ!

Let her Start the Process after she has become a USC.

The Process takes about 5-7months without RFE's.(Request For Evidence")

USCIS adjudication officer uses RFEs to request additional information on the pending application under any of the following circumstances: (1) Something is not clear in a case that you have filed; (2) If there is a document missing; (3) the officer needs updated information on your case; (4) the RFE notice was issued by mistake or in error; (5) the RFE letter was issued for any other reasons the adjudication officer likes.

An RFE doesn't mean that USCIS is about to deny your case though.

The best way to avoid an RFE is to get your case prepared and filed properly BEFORE your case is submitted to USCIS. You can get several examples from VJ's vast resources if you are willing to put in the time to research.

Welcome to VJ!!!

Hi!.. I am in the same boat!.. I am applying for my citizenship and ill apply for my fiance AS SOON AS I get my citizenship. (Like ASAP!)

One thing I will advise you: The process can take 6-10 months alltogether so try to apply ASAP!..

Start getting all the documents ready (Proof of having met within the past 2 years, documents that you have to sign [G325A and intent to marry] and your passport ID picture) So that you could send it to her so that she can get everything ready by the time she gets her oath.

So that she will be able to apply right after she gets her naturalization certificate.

I am hoping to be a citizen by May latest too! So maybe we will be BFF VJer??? :)

All that being said, please send a lot of time on this website, you will learn a lot and your process will be much smoother.

Read, read and read more.

And one last thing: In event of doubt, PLEASE ASK!!.. No question is too dumb or too slow.. Somebody else has had the same issue in the past so people will answer your questions..

And then in the future, do the smae for other people!... :)

Best,

Welcome to VJ!

Yes it will take time but having VJ to guide you is a wonderful thing. I wish we had known about VJ a year ago it would of made our journey a little easier.

Hang in there and do things right the first time. Be patient and keep records and copies of everything you submit. It is advisable to do the citizenship first. Best of luck!
