Hi all:

Just thought I’d reveal a recent revelation that I have had. My wife came to the USA on December 22nd, 2010, on a K-1 fiancée visa. We were married on December 30th, 2010. My wife, Roza, decided to keep her maiden name for the time being. We applied for a SSN on January 10th, 2011 and told it would arrive in two weeks. No card after 3 weeks. Went back and received her SSN but still no card. Went back again and had a replacement for the original card sent to the local SSA office. On March 7th, I mailed a card off to her for Women’s Day at our local post office. Her name and address as the recipient and my work name and address for the return address. Well one week later the card arrives at my work. In the mean time I’ve called the local post office about returned mail and the carrier has not returned anything with her name on it. So when the card is returned to me at work, I go into the local post office and ask why was it returned? “Is her name on the mail box?” the clerk asks. So it would appear that the letter carriers can return properly addressed mail if they do not recognize the name on the letter—this is contrary to the USPS’ website where it states that all properly addressed mail will be delivery regardless of the name on the letter.

I would recommend that all people when dealing with the USCIS sign up for electronic delivery so you get your case number. Once you have the case number, sign-up for e-mail alerts regarding your pending application on the USCIS website. Make your local post office aware of the new person living there even if it is the same last name, but especially if the last names are different. USCIS corresponds with you via standard US mail and if the USPS is returning your mail as undeliverable how do you know? I am sure that what has happened to me is not the norm and a vast majority of people do not have any problems with their mail, but there are those that state they have been waiting since X and have not heard anything. Now I am beginning to understand why—their NOA might have been returned by the USPS and if you do not have a case number in order to sign-up for e-mail alerts how will you know? I am just glad one of our NOAs made it to us and I signed up for text and e-mail alerts as that is how I discovered the NOA had been returned by the USPS.

Thanks for letting me vent about this and I hope this keeps at least one person from having this problem.

Same thing, I got letters in my married name but because my name was not on the mail box they did not leave the mail. We had 1 peice of mail with " ? " question marks writen ALL over the envelope, one that was addressed to me with my married name.

We wrote my name with married name and my name with maiden name on a card and put it in the mailbox with his name card and they started leaving my mail in it properly. Had to do the same thing when we got a new house so we would get our mail.
