Nightmare commute may not be good for you, but your spouse loves it.

When asked if they would take a "dream" job offer if it required a two-hour commute each way, 40% of respondents said "yes" in the FINS.com online question forum Sign or Decline.

That's four hours a day, at least 20 hours a week and more than one month a year. And many Americans already do it.

A long commute is all about tradeoffs. Extra minutes are balanced by a better paying job or more bang for your real-estate buck. But the tradeoff seldom pays off when it comes to happiness, according to 2008 research from the University of Basel and the University of Zurich.

According to the report, someone who commutes for 44 minutes a day would require an additional 470 euro a month ($642) in income to be happier than someone who worked from home and had a zero-minute commute.

The two authors of the study crunched 19 years of German surveys on happiness and found that the stress of commuting is seldom worth the pay.

...

The report noted that while the subjective well-being of the commuter suffers, that of the corresponding spouse might improve and balance things out. In other words, when considering an entire household, rather than an individual worker, a long commute might be justified -- a phenomena known in the U.S. as taking one for the team.

Back in California, I was commuting about 60 miles each way to work and home. I adjusted to it, but it is no fun.
