If you have truly studied Islam and have decided that it is the correct choice for you it does not matter where you convert...

If you are making the choice of Islam to please someone else you should not convert...I am Muslim and I say this with kindness I have seen many make the choice to convert to Islam to please their spouse or fiance it never seems to work out for them (Islam)

just my opinion

are you sure you want to convert? or just following her family decision?

For the family and Islam's way of things.

Thank you sara for your opinion :) After a lot of soul searching and asking/reading advice from other people, I have decided I would convert. It would be the only way for my dream girl and I to be together. There's a lot more to this thought process of mine. She and I have made a good understanding on this as well.

I just wanted to know if there would be any legal matters that may arise depending on where I convert. Thank you both for your replies :)

You could convert anywhere, just like my fiance, he converted in USA but he converted long time ago before we met. Welcome to Islam but hope you do it coz you believe it from your heart but that is your life, no one can manage it but you. Enjoy it with your own decision.

To remove your fiancee's family doubtness, i think it is better and best choice is to convert in Indonesia, in front of her family with some legals and authorities who can guide you about the conversion.

I wish I could be more helpful with sources but I will try my best; like you I was confused before about where to convert. To be honest I have not yet fully converted (reciting in front of Imam and witnesses, etc), I have only practiced. Before I went to visit my fiancèe, I planned to convert in my home town. I don't live in a big city so finding a mosque close by is difficult. Anyway, the advantage of converting in the USA, I believe that the certificate will be in English so when you visit Indonesia to marry her you don't have to translate it using an authorized translator because the Civil Office (KUA) requires the documents to all be in English if you aren't Indonesian. If you use translator you have to wait for 2-4 days for the documents to be legalized. So the advantage of converting in the USA is less waiting for official English documentation and the advantage of converting in Indonesia would be having your fiancèe or any of her family to help you and be a witness.

I hope this helps, good luck.

@Utha, thanks for your reply, you made a very valid point in converting in Indonesia.

@Nur&Brandon, my fiancee said that if I converted in the USA,then my english document would have to be translated into Indonesian. If the KUA is not able to understand the english document, then they may make me recite the lines again. I don't know, I'm confused now. I'll ask my fiancee again. Thank you for your reply :)
