I am going to be importing my vehicle from Canada to the USA upon POE on a K-1 Visa. I received a letter of compliance back in Nov 2010 (I figured it might take a while to receive it, but I got it right away). I want to make sure that it is recent enough to be sufficient for registration in California. I am going to copy what it states in the letter, and if anyone knows what information is needed to register your vehicle in CA from Canada, please advise. I want to make sure I have my bases covered.

Letter states:

Dear Ms. ********:

We are responding to your request for a letter regarding a 2007

Toyota Yaris HATCHBACK 5DR 4A manufactured to meet Canadian

Motor Vehicle Safety and Emission Standards and compliance with

U.S. D.O.T. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety, Bumper, Theft

Prevention (“FMVSS”) and E.P.A. Exhaust Emission Standards.

An investigation conducted by Toyota Canada Inc. indicates that

vehicle chassis number **************** does satisfy U.S.

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety and E.P.A. Exhaust Emission

Standards, with the exception of certain labeling violations, as

they may apply to your specific vehicle in effect at the time of

manufacture.

Please note however, that the odometer installed on the vehicle

registers in kilometers as required by Canadian Motor Vehicle

Standards and may not satisfy the law of the State in which you

wish to relocate. As a result, you may be unable to register

your vehicle in that state and for this reason you may wish to

contact the Motor Vehicle Bureau or other responsible office of

the state in which you are relocating prior to moving.

Finally, Canadian market Toyota vehicles may have unique

features and equipment compared to similar U.S. versions.

Certain parts and service may not be available or difficult to

obtain due to these differences. Please retain this notice with

your vehicle, and inform all future purchasers in the United

States that this is a Canadian market vehicle and differences do

exist.

We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to assist you in this

regard."

And it is signed, etc.

I want to note that my speedometer registers Miles as well as KM. The odometer is digital, and does in fact register in KM only (not sure about changing this?)

I have not yet checked my vehicle for CA emissions standards approval stickers. Will do tomorrow.

Any comments? Anything else needed?

I took my BMW 2008 in for inspection here in Phoenix upon arrival. It was required to have a new dash readout installed to read in both kms and miles as the one it had was only kms. It could be reset for other parts of the dash to read kms or miles but the actually spedometer was kms only. Hate to tell you but they aren't a cheap replacement :-( $1200 later it was repaired and was reregistered.

My speedometer is okay, it is just the odometer that says KM only...hopefully that won't be as big of a deal.

I registered my vehicle in FL and didn't need to change anything with the km/mileage issue. It was recorded as such in the foreign vehicle importation document they filled out. Mind you, there's an old post of mine detailing the fiasco when the registration came back showing the odometer reading in miles instead of km's, but that's another story. :)

I'm going to move your thread from the Moving Here forum to the Canada forum, as that is where you will find the information you require.

Registration in Nebraska wanted to see my car changed to miles instead of KMs. I ended up having to mess around with all the buttons till I finally figured out how to change it to Miles on the odom. The spedom in my car has both miles and kms. Tis a ford focus I drive.

In the end i'm not sure if its because the guy didn't want to have to convert the KM to miles on his own... because they had to write down my KM in miles on the forms for my registration of the car.
