I would say the similarities are more numerous than the differences.

The biggest difference is that the Android Market isn't as restrictive as Apple's App Store.

Otherwise, rooting an android device does exactly what jailbreaking an iDevice does: It gives you access to install apps outside of the designed market/store and allows you to install hacks/modifications that would otherwise be blocked by design through the will of your carrier.

FWIW, I am not an Apple Fanboi. I've had Android, Windows Mobile & iPhone devices. I've cooked my own roms, rooted & jailbroken devices. I was an active Moderator on XDA-Developers forum for many years.

I guess I would have to agree, after your explanation... that they do have more similarities than differences, and you're right, it depends on what the carries decide to block, as with Verizon, you can enable side loading without having to root your device, but it limits what can be installed and from what I heard, ATT blocks that completely and you have to root before you can even do that....

App Store is locked down by Apple, if they don't like it, it won't get on there, as where as Android market, even if you can't get it on the Market, you can find the .apk file somewhere else.. I had a winmo device that was unlocked and used that for trips back to Phils.. works great...

Now, as far as no bars and still make phone calls.. umm.. don't know, I've had Moto, HTC, LG, and Samsung phone, when ever they showed no bars, I was not making any phone calls... maybe it's the phones, but I've always not been able to recieve/make calls when I was not showing any bars... I guess we can say this would have to be chalked up to experiencing it, I'm just saying I haven't witness what you're describing with any of the devices I've owned..

I too am not a Fanboi of any company, I'm a fanboi of Technology, show me something that has the specs I want/need, I will buy it(funds pending of coarse.. ).. and why did you stop moderating on XDA forum? They have alot of people on there cooking up some nice ROMs, I love that forum
