Surrender Certificate required when coming back from india?

Hello Friends,

There have been several rumors going around about USC being asked for 'Surrender Certificate when coming back from India. I've a 10 year visa to India and I am a naturalized USC. I've been USC for over 10 years now. I plan to travel to India for 2 or 3 weeks in late January 2011. Will the people at airport in India ask me for Surrender Certificate when I come to US?

Anyone recently got back from India who have any experience to share? It will be very helpful.

Thanks!!!

Well I got back frm India last April this surrender thg started afterward. Basically surrender certificate is signed by Indian embassy in ny saying all prior Indian passports of USC has been cancelled.

I dont think thy ask all USC at immigration but its good to have it handy. If u don have surrender certificate but instead u have indian passport w/ cancelled stamp in it u r ok bc its showing tht u r only holding 1 valid passport (i.e., US passport) n not any other countries passport. Hope this helps.

P.S. it takes 2-3 weeks 2 get surrender certificate frm Indian embassy in NY.

I dont think they are asking surrender cert if you are traveling on OCI, I am guessing coz somewhere in their system they have cancelled your Indian passport and issued u a OCI.

Person cannot hold Indian passport and OCI at same time.

If you are traveling on tourist visa then chances are you will be asked to show surrender certificat.
