There is no good way to check on appointment status?

A fellow poster recenty found that his family member missed the interview appointment because she never receive the appointment package. How often does this happen? And who can we call to make sure the same thing doesn't happen to us? E-mailing the embassy has proved to be useless because they will respond with generic e-mail. Does the department of state has any information on appointment date?
