Care to enlighten us as to what has happened? I was through DME last month and am going again in January. No problem last month.

Hey james&olya !

4 days ago Moscow had a winter storm with alot of freezing rain which brought down power lines and such. Knocked out ALL the power to the terminal at DME and some power at SVO .... even the trams and electric buses in some places lost power. Totally messed up the customs and passport control .... and as of today DME was still not functioning. My Olga has been watching it on Channel 1 and RTR Planeta ( I think that is the station ) and they are reporting many people are stuck there. I guess yesterday there was as many as 10,000 people up on the 2nd floor at DME just milling around unable to continue on.

Wow. I am glad I wasn't trying to connect there when that happened. Sounds like it shouldn't still be a problem a month from now.

Maybe now would be a good time to pitch some stand-by gennies to em.

Been watching it on the news here in Simferopol and just glad we're not flying anywhere for now. I wanted to use Wizz to go to Kyiv on Sun, but Mila nixed that and we scored the last two Kupe bunks (together) on the train.

I see NYC got hammered too. How did the rest of NE fare Gary?

Unfortunately my wife had to witness it first hand. She was there Sunday, Monday, Tuesday ... and she went back to her family's. She told me real horror stories from those three days. If that had happened in the US, a class action would have been filed already.

We'll receive the new year separately thanks to that. She's now scheduled to return some day in 2011, but I'll be working again. In summary, we'll have winter vacation no more. :crying:

The son of my best friend is teaching English in Kazan, Russia. All of his fellow teachers (mostly British) flew off to some place for the winter break and got stuck in Moscow because of the snow. He told his Dad that he was glad he didn't try to go anyway and he's enjoying the blizzard in Kazan.

Damn Clueless.... sorry to hear that !!!!!

Olga has been glued to the tv and internet ( .. and frankly so have I ) watching this thing. I guess along with the electricity, the water was also shut down. Nothing to eat or drink and I guess the restrooms were also out of service ! I can only imagine !!!

Glad to hear your wife is out of there !!

Rossiya24 tv is reporting now that the power is back at DME, but they are really backed up ( no kidding ! ), the director of DME has been fired, Aeroflot is offering a total of $2M for pax troubles, and some poor Russian tourist was stuck at DME.. finally got out to the US and arrived at JFK just in time to get stuck there !!!

I think I really like Jul/Aug travelling !!!! :)

My girl luckily had her vacation planned for next weekend out of Moscow

She was nearly caught up in 2 airport meltdowns this year. Just within the past 2 months actually. Spain and London….She was supposed to holiday in Spain when the controllers walked off the job. She was enroute to Italy to make a connecting flight but was stranded in Italy for the duration. She didn’t mind being shipwrecked in Italy.

She dodged a bullet with London a few weeks ago. She left London 2 days before the snow hit wreaked havoc on travel in the UK.

Would travel insurance cover these weather related interuptions?

My fiance got stuck in this. We found out about DME and got a ticket out of SVO for the next day. When she got to SVO, she found it was basically in the same boat and she couldn't get out there either. I had already gotten to Budapest by then and she was at her wits end and didn't want to travel. Luckily, she found the strength and rolled the dice on a different plan. She grabbed a train to Kiev and then caught a flight to Budapest. We lost a day and a half of our precious time together but we were still able to have a great New Years. I guess it's like everything with this stupid process. All the trials and tribulations either break your relationship or strengthen it. In our case, once again we are a little closer after all the pain and stress.
