Hey Guys,

I just found this forum today and I was so impressed by everyone's knowledge I decided to sign up. I am in need of encouragement lately because I feel so confused by all the legal processes that I must go through to be with the one I love. Hopefully, we'll be starting the process within the next year or so. By the way, we are Cortney (that's me, the American) & Duncan (the Canadian).

Here's our story in a nutshell:

We met online just over 8 years ago. Not looking for romance at all (we were only 16), just started talking while playing reversi in a yahoo game room (how cool are we?). For a while, we emailed back and forth and became really good friends. Finally after about 9 months, we had the chance to talk on the phone for the first time. I don't remember ever being so nervous or excited for a phone call. Anyway, finally after five years of talking almost every day, our first visit was planned. We spent two and a half weeks together & had a blast. I knew I had truly met my best friend and the person I believe to be my soulmate. Saying goodbye was the hardest thing we'd ever been through.

After another year, we had another visit. It was shorter than the first, only one week & not long enough to get settled in. He was here & gone in a flash leaving us heartbroken again. Our third visit was just a couple of months ago (after yet another year of being apart). It was the best yet. If it were up to us, he would not have gotten on his flight back. But we know that's not an option as of yet.

People that know our situation don't really understand what it's like to be in a relationship like this. It's so much work, but to me it's worth it. It also makes me so thankful for the days and nights I get to spend with my guy and to never take our time for granted.

Welcome to VJ! When my now husband and I first decided to get married and have me move to the US, we thought of hiring an attorney but we're glad we didn't. All the questions we had were answered right here and for free! Good luck on your journey.
