Hi All

Does anyone know how closely they review during N-400 interview the divorce document?

I am a GC for over 15 years now living in the US and am applying for citizenship.

Went through a relatively nasty divorce to my former US citizen wife about 10 years ago.

We didn't have children but part of divorce decree was making a hefty payment to her of about $100,000.

I just agreed to it because I wanted her out of my life.

She may have sent a nasty letter to the INS at the time telling them I just got married for citizenship.

Does anyone know how much they review the divorce decree? Do they just look at dates of marriage and divorce?

Or do they comb through the whole thing looking and asking questions about why and what happened??? Would a payout like that be considered that I bought a GC by marrying her?

Wifes' friend said she was questioned about her divorce, maybe because she was already on her fourth marriage. Her IO asked here why so many marriages, she just replied, I don't know how to pick them, but she was applying under marriage and had to bring in her previous three divorce documents. Was no problem for her.

With us, we were both married once also applying under marriage, wife said her IO just wanted to see the front page of our divorce papers, had to be the original to make sure we were free to marry, then our marriage certificate, like they didn't do this before during our AOS stage. But again, applying under the marriage three year privilege.

I don't believe you even have to bring in your divorce papers filing under the five year rule, but someone with experience may suggest otherwise.

As far as getting hit with a divorce, even though my ex-wife was the wayward one, I sure got creamed, she got half of everything, but didn't get my kids, always a very bitter experience. Half of all marriages end up in a divorce and most are not because a partner met someone else.

My friend's ex wife send a letter to NASA, claiming he's an alien from outer space who decided to get born on planet Earth in order to rule the Universe. Can you believe it, neither the guys from NASA nor the Secret Service ever followed up on this important information!

No wonder we now have mice with human brain implants!

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Thanks Nick for your advice.

I'm happy for you now but sorry about the stress that occured before

All is well that ends well, ex wife was driving me nuts running up huge credit card bills each month, was severely injured in an automotive accident, next day she files for divorce. Really hate no-fault divorce laws, if a spouse is an alcoholic or a gambler and runs the family deep into debt, if there is only a can of beans left, that spouse gets half of that can. What idiots came out with this kind of law? She did want to claim my insurance settlement, but the court wouldn't allow that. Was a large settlement, but my health care provider showed up with three attorneys and got back three years of medical bills off the top, even though I had my own health insurance. Wasn't enough money left over to buy a cup of coffee.

Was a bit depressed, but my son said, least you got rid of her, not a nice thing to say about his own mom, so could start my life over again. The pinnacle of all this is when I started to pull my life back together again, she wanted to come back. Can repeat on this board how I responded to that. Seemed monstrous at first, but within four years was able to become debt free without my ex spending money faster than I could earn it. Got my last kid through college after six years and was living alone, in eight, met the woman of my most wildest dreams, but then was immigration.

Am an engineer, a big part of my job is finding components to remain competitive, the world has to be open to accomplish this, so why limit my search for a mate to within the confines of my town or even my country? In reading the Part 8 of the N-400, feel my wife would have had problems if say I had already married several immigrants and divorced them all, but was only married once and to a US citizen. My wife's friend with multiple divorces were all in her home country, mainly the reason why she didn't have a problem. Things are a lot different in foreign countries than here, a woman in particular is more of a slave to her spouse and such things as wife beating are quite common and accepted. No wonder why there are so many divorces.

Ha, my wife loves to show me off when we go down there to visit, practically her of her friends are divorced and looking for a guy like me and asked if I know of anyone. Life is pretty great now, incredible how a couple can pull themselves together when they love and work toward a common goal. Hopefully, you will meet a person like that.
