Customs Declaration

My fiancé will be entering the US for the first time via the K1 visa and we were wondering what to do in regards to the Customs Declaration form and what he should declare or not declare. He is bringing everything with him in his luggage (checked/carry-on) and will be shipping nothing. The items he is bringing include: clothing, a computer hard-drive, a computer memory card, a computer keyboard (all computer items are a year old or more and used), as well as medications, and maybe some other personal items such as books and papers.

Should he list these items on the form?

And if so, what would be the suggestion as far as value for these items?

Nothing will be brought to be sold and nothing will be gifts. They are all personal belongings.

You just need to declare money over 10,000 dollars, but I don't know how that works. For medicine, you might need a doctor's prescription with it.

I once went to the second check at customs. A cop will open your bag and search with his hands for something. In my case he found nothing weird, asked me if I had medication, I said yes and what it was for, but he didn't want to check the prescription when I offered. So the only thing that might happen is that you'll spend some more minutes talking about whatever you are carrying.

You are very brave to bring books, they are soooo heavy. I even left all my socks in Brazil to reduce weight and not pay the extra weight fee

When you move to US, you have 10 years to move your belongings to the country without them being taxed.

So even if your total of possessions would go over that (as bringing all of them at once, unlikely I think), if you have owned them before moving that should still be covered. (easiest if you can bring a bit at a time during years).

Mainly they are looking for cash and valuable over $10,000 as per the regulation that has to be reported. There is no fine for bringing more money, but then all you need to show is the source of the money and that its legit.

Secondly they are looking for drugs and prohibited items.

Third they are looking any organic material in your baggage.

and Fourth based on origin of your country they have specific things they are looking for,eg. from ppl traveling from India they look for Mangoes(during the Mango season).

So if you are not carrying anything that fits in this items then you dont have to worry, just fill out the gree customs form and you are fine.
