How long till I get my Interview???

My wife is a US citizen and we have been married for almost 5 years.

I sent in all documents to NVC, and as of April 2010 my file was completed and sent to the American Counsellate in Montreal.

It is now September and I still have not heard about an interview date. I have called the NVC on numerous occasions and they keep telling me that they have no idea when my interview call will come in and that solely depends on the counsellate.

Does it usually take this long???

If it doesn't, why is my case taking so long to process??

You may want to check out this timeline

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/94768-ir1-cr1-montreal-timeline-to-interview/

They have been waiting an awfully long time, some have only NOW received interviews for October. I am positive someone from that group will chime in to give you some insight.

Unfortunately, Montreal is VERY slow!!

Good luck!!

Montreal is extremely backlogged, and has been for a long time. Hopefully you hear something soon, all of you waiting. The wait is CRAZY!!! I thought the wait was long when I was waiting and it was 4 months then.

Check out the canada forums for people waiting for montreal... It generally takes 4-6 months to get an interview, at least for a K1, at montreal. But it can be unpredictable. You probably aren't the only one. It sounds like you filed for a IR1 or CR1. Check out the other timelines for those visas.

Thanks for the replies...wasn't expecting them so fast. :)

I don't know which visa I'm applying for...I just filled in all the forms and sent them in (and there were a lot of forms). I thought I was applying directly for a green card since my wife is a US citizen, so I guess this is another surprise finding out I will be getting a visa instead.

seriously? you never looked at any guides/forms on visajourney? and you never looked at any information on USCIS website as to WHAT you are filing and why?

I followed all the steps on the USCIS website, starting with the I-130 and then following the procedure as outlined. There were so many different forms, G-325, I-864, DS-230 and then the amount of supporting documentation. There were a few extra things that the NVC asked for, and having supplied all of that they sent me an e-mail notification that my file was complete with them and they will be forwarding it to the counsellate.

I don't think I ever came across the actual visa type that I was applying for. Now that I have looked into it further, I figure I will be eligible for the IR-1 visa as we have been married for longer than 5 years.

Thank you for your help once again. I might sound foolish asking so many questions, so please bear with me.

By the forms you said you filled out and how long you have been married it sounds like IR1.

Welcome to Visa Journey :).

You have applied for what is known as a spousal visa - the CR-1/IR-1 (CR if you have been married for less than 2 years when it is approved and IR if you have been married more than 2 years when it is approved). Because you are living outside of the US you need to have a visa to enter the US. The CR-1/IR-1 will provide you with a visa that is attached to your passport. When you actually cross into the US, the Visa 'activates' your status in the US as a permanent resident - which means getting a green card :) . You will get a stamp in your passport by the visa which will act as a temporary green card, to be followed by the actual physical green card in the mail.

Yes, Montreal is considered one of the slowest Consulates in the whole world so your wait is not unexpected or out of line. There are a number of CR-1 applicants in this forum - and you can also read through the CR-1/IR-1 forum regularly to get an idea of the process. The only differences in the processing of these two versions of the spousal visa is after your arrival in the US so you will find the information in the forum useful although most of the participants are CR-1s. (They have to apply to remove their 'conditional status' in 2 years - you don't ).

There are guides pinned to the top of the CR-1 forum that you will find helpful, and for support and venting, you are more than welcome to join us here in the Canada forum.

Good luck - I hope you hear something soon - and at least you now know you are in good company. :)
