Medical Exam Problem

She went to her medical exam at St. Lukes and was told she needed a sputum test. So she had her appointment on the 20th of August resheduled :( indefinately until sputum lab results come back. She will be taking the sputum test on 16, 17, 18 August.

Can anyone give me an idea of how this process works and how long it takes for results to come back?

They told her two months--but so far everything, luckily, has been a lot less waiting times then the 'advertised' waiting times.

Basically, St Lukes will get a Sputum sample, then it will take 2 months before they'd know if she has an active TB or not. If she has an active TB, she will then need to have that 6-month treatment process in St. Lukes. That she has to be there everyday to take the medicine from them. In other way, if sputum test turns out to be negative, then she can proceed to have an interview at the embassy.

Good luck!

St. Lukes will take sputum samples from her on those three days. They will do two things with the sputum samples.

The first thing is a smear test. She should get the results of the smear test back quickly...maybe in a day or two.

The second thing is a culture. The culture takes two months and is more accurate.

In two months, when the culture turns out negative, she will go back to St. Lukes and complete her medical by receiving her immunizations. At that time, St. Lukes will reschedule her interview. Her interview will be scheduled for a few days or less after she completes her medical.

Please try not to worry too much about it. St. Lukes seems to "find" things on chest x-rays all the time, which leads to a smear test and a culture. However, very very few turn out to be TB. According to the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, of all the people who passed through St. Lukes in 2007, far less than one percent actually had active TB.

One thing is guaranteed: the waiting is pure h3ll. :(
