Hi VJers, :)

I will apply for my citizenship in a few weeks. I was getting ready reading about the process and collecting the documents, everything was smooth till I saw the part about "Status Information Letter". Do I need to get this or just writing an affidavit of unknowing is enough. I entered the US between the age 18 - 26 and I overstayed my visa which made me required to register with the SSS. At that time I didn't know that I had to register. Days went by and I became a LPR (I was 31 yrs old) so I didn't register due to age limit. Now do I need to get that letter or a letter explaining why I didn't register signed and dated is enough?

Also, while I was googleing the SSS and searching to know more about the "Status Information Letter" I read that I need to bring all expired passports ever issued by a government to the interview. Is that true? Or is it only the passport that I used to enter the US as a LPR?!.

I always thought that the citizenship process is the easiest but it doesn't seem that way.

I appreciate all the replies and info.

Here is my thought on the expired passport part:

Really no need, unless you hung on to them for whatever reason and can provide them. Some countries also require that you hand the expired / old passport over as soon as you get your passport renewed / replaced, thus these ppl wouldn't even be able to provide it.

So if you have any expired passports good, if not, no big deal. At my interview I wasn't asked about any old passports. Actually the interviewer didn't even bother looking at my current one.

I think the bigger issue for you will be the selective service issue, but I can't help you with that.

If you came here legally, got your LPR card, there is no law that you have to renew your foreign passport. Reason for bringing in your passports, expired or not since becoming a LPR is to verified your trips outside of the USA that lasted over 24 hours. But if your passport was expired during that period, and you didn't make any trips, really no problem. But good to bring in your expire passport anyway to let your IO know you couldn't make any trips. But this only extends to the time you were a LPR.

Regarding the rest, have to be 100% honest and offer an explanation, if you attempt to misrepresent and they find out, won't be really the nature of whatever you did wrong as much as you misrepresented on your application about whatever that situation was. And is reason for deportation. If in doubt, best to contact a good immigration attorney. Finding a good immigration attorney can also be a problem like some that came here stated.

Thanks tweety & NickD

NickD, I wasn't saying or planning on misrepresenting. :) I was asking what does USCIS typically will ask for the Status Information Letter or just a letter explaining why I didn't register with SSS? :hehe:

I'm hoping someone can help on this subjec? come on VisaJourney you can don't :)

Thanks again

Not sure how to reply, when my wife and step daughter first received their conditional LPR, a brochure was attached stating if they are a male between the ages of 18 and 25 they must register with Selective Service. But only after they became a LPR, and since they are both female, they were not required to register. Where is the ERA in this?

Gather you are saying you didn't receive your LPR card until you were 31, you are no longer required to register. If you were here on a visa, not required to register, only LPR and US citizens have to register. Was more concerned about your overstay, but somehow you managed to get your LPR card. I really don't know how to deal with an overstay. When I was dating my wife, she could come here with a visa, we watched her I-94 like a hawk. Had two options, either to extend it, or she had to leave, we didn't want that overstay problem.
