New York City's Landmarks Preservation Commission denied landmark status Tuesday for a building at the site of a proposed Islamic center and mosque near ground zero.

The commissioners voted unanimously against landmark status for 45-47 Park Place. It and an adjoining building are owned by real estate developer Soho Properties, which intends to build an Islamic center two blocks north of the former site of the World Trade Center.

While the public vote was the focus of much debate about the planned Islamic center and mosque, the commission could not have prevented the developers from building such a community center. The commission, by designating the building a landmark, could only have prevented Soho Properties from demolishing the building or significantly altering its exterior.

There is a prayer site in the building currently, so Muslims are peacefully praying in the building already.

Some people just don't seem to understand! Pushing Islam away and alienating its followers will only aid the extremists recruiting efforts. Its why 9/11 happend in the first place.

Most of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudis not alienated Muslim Americans.

They attacked downtown NYC which has plenty of Muslims and mosques.

9/11 had nothing to do Al Qaeda wanting more mosques built in America.

There is a precedent to this. The harder you push a marginalized group away, the more despair they feel and fewer options other than extremist groups. No, the 9/11 hijackers weren't american muslims. We have however seen an uptick in americans joining the taliban and al-qaida.

Plenty of Americans have been hit by the Great Recession sticking it to "the other" is part of the pattern finding someone to blame.

Not much of an uptick as most Americans turning to Taliban/Al Qaeda had some family links to that part of the world or are nutty American converts. I don't see a big wave of average American people willing to fight for those groups.

What horrible precedent? Local governments face off with citizens all the time on urban planning issues. It's been handled within the law and everyone had their say without a lot of violence. Government doesn't exist to suppress all strife and differences but to make sure things are carried under the rule of law.
