I have never had a problem with the French either.

I reckon we provoked them by keeping Calais and the cinque ports for hundreds of years.

Similarly the Italians got a bad rap as they were very brave in the 1st war (1914 to 1918) during the alps campaign

I don’t think the Luxemburg navy has much to brag about

Exactly - no good at all...

What I'd really like is for everyone to base their assessments of today's matters on today and not some deep-seated hatred or bias because of wars that happened 250 years ago.

But, the public - as good as they are at ignoring everything else - likes to hold grudges about wars and battles.

I don't hold a grudge about the war of Independence even though the rebels (about one third of the population) stole land that had been developed by England over 150 years at great cost in money and lives. It was treasonous. It was an illegal armed insurrection.

Imagine California setting up as a Latino country and being assisted by North Korea ? Hey it could happen.

Anyway - the revolution can just go now as it was a long time ago - I am prepared to put it behind me.

Americans won't let it go and there are cracks about it every day on TV. 'Sick as King George on July the 5th'. The only problem I have with it is some Italian - American guy from Chicago whose family arrived in 1899 pouring scorn on the Brits because of it.

Everyone I have met here claims a relative on the Mayflower including my wife. It must have

been bigger than the bloody Titanic

My dad got sick of the rah-rah and used to say that when the pilgrim fathers landed on the Plymouth rock - it should have been the other way round.

That it was. And it was done in response to a tyrannical government that was not represented by the people.... much like our government is becoming.

I don't know if we'd fight to keep California.

I'm telling you, we should add slavery to that list too. It was a long time ago.

Well, I keep hearing Brits who say stuff like "America should be more like Britain" and that's where a lot of that comes from.

Americans are largely ignorant of what's not staring them in the face. Even then, it takes some prodding or a free value meal before they'll acknowledge it.

Can't say that I blame him.
