If it wasn't, I don't believe it would be illegal in the US. I know the church puts a moral spanner in the works in the US, but it's not simply a question of whether 'god' approves of multiple partners, it's whether sex should or should not be valued as something beyond an animalistic act.

And after admonishing ME not to discuss the government you can't go 2 pages without doing it yourself. And therein lies the problem. The government FORCING the morals of other people on ME and the rest of society.

These MORAL issues turn into LEGAL issues with one moral position or another being forced on other people. Ironically, it is usually liberals, who claim to be FOR women's choice, that want to restrict women's choices about what to do with their bodies. Very strange. If the government can make prostitution illegal, they can make abortion illegal.

These are personal choices, your belief in a God (if any), your belief in what sex should be. These are things for YOU to decide for YOU. Not for me. I may, or may not, agree with you on how I view sex for MYSELF, it doesn't matter.

Let the free market decide. Do you own your own body or does the government own it?

If it's your body, you should be allowed to sell any part of it, be it your #######

or a kidney if you choose to do so.

Government? What the hell, are you Gary now? This is nothing to do with free markets or government this is to do with how people view the ethics of sexual contracts. If the 'free market' is going to decide everything, then clearly ethics and morality are redundant - might as well get rid of all lawyers, judges and police because there is no necessity to have them at all.

Regardless, my point remains, is sex something that has value beyond an being an act of selfish pleasure?

Depends. For example, a ####### is purely an act of selfish pleasure - it doesn't matter in the slightest whether your partner likes it or hates it.

Gary, are you really that poor at reading comprehension? I merely said that I did not think that the only reason why prostitution was illegal was because of the moral dimension. in other words, NOTHING TO DO WITH FORCING MY MORALITY ON ANYONE ELSE AT ALL.

How many women will give a ####### and expect nothing in return?

More to the point, would you be comfortable always receiving sexual pleasure and never giving it?

Lots of things were legal simply because the legal infrastructure did not exist to enforce a plethora of laws, whatever one thinks of that. Regardless, my point remains, is sex something that has value beyond an being an act of selfish pleasure? Why does anyone care at all if their partner is or isn't sexually aroused? Can a prostitute be raped by a client?

All moral questions to be answered by oneself for oneself, except the last one. YES. prostitutes can be raped. Just like any other woman, if she is forced to do something she does not agree to or if the client does not pay. Of course that assumes the act is LEGAL and she can file a complaint. Keeping prostitution illegal only assures that women will be abused with no recourse. Seems fine to "feminists". The only fallacy is the belief that making it illegal will somehow end the practice.

People in realtionships expect something from that relationship. Big surprise. As for the rest of the question, I do not know, but it is the world's best alarm clock!

If you don't care about the sexual pleasure of your partner - I expect that attitude plays merry hell with relationships. Might as well be using prostitutes in that case.

Yes, government. Most Americans believe prostitution should be legal.

As soon as you swerve from moral arguments to legal ones...it is the "government". I thought we were discussing this topic under the assumption that it was legal. You said we were discussing the moral and ethical aspects...so stick to it or leave.

Gary, there is a spectrum of thought among feminists regarding prostitution. There is no consensus position that it should be illegal.

A lot of women enjoy giving pleasure to their husbands, and even get great pleasure in it themselves. Problem?

If they didn't enjoy it, they wouldn't do it - it's as simple as that. Or perhaps they would,

if they wanted to please their partner. Either way, it can't be exploitative if it's purely

voluntary. (I'm talking about a relationship - not prostitution.)

Yes, I am quite aware that the prostitute fakes her pleasure. However, the person who visits the prostitute is quite aware that the pleasure is faked, unless he is mentally challenged, so in the light of that, how enjoyable is sex with someone you know is not being turned on by your performance?

that's actually some song lyrics.

If it's volunteered, sure. But relationships are give and take - if a person doesn't care about the sexual pleasure of their partner then the relationship isn't likely to last.

What happens if you're into oral, but your partner is not (or vice versa)? Is the relationship necessarily doomed?
