If it wasn't, I don't believe it would be illegal in the US. I know the church puts a moral spanner in the works in the US, but it's not simply a question of whether 'god' approves of multiple partners, it's whether sex should or should not be valued as something beyond an animalistic act.

These MORAL issues turn into LEGAL issues with one moral position or another being forced on other people.
