My Canadian Passport Expires in January 2011

I just sent my AOS paperwork today (July 15th) to Chicago *happydance*.

That said, I was just wondering if someone has an idea as to what timeframe I should get my new passport what with my current one expiring in January 2011?

If I do get a new one in December-ish, does it/would it impact my AOS info, etc?

Any info would be greatly appreciated-thanks!

My passport renewal took over a couple of months, but that was because the passport office rejected my photos as they were not up to their standards. I had taken my photos at Walgreen's and a Canadian friend was here visiting so she acted as my guarantor. But when they were rejected, I had to get a new guarantor and I ended up getting my photos done professionally. Cost more and was a hassle. Then they had questions on my second application. So it could be that mine was a long time due to various Canada Passport office questions. I do recommend getting high quality passport photos. It will save you time and money.

I would do it more then a month before it expires though. You don;t want to have an expired passport and have some kind of emergency that you need to get back home for (and yes, you can have an expired passport and still travel)

For renewning - I believe within 6 months of the expiry date is acceptable. Mine expired this coming Dec'10 and I just renewed it last week while I was back home. It won't impact you AOS at all - you're renewing a Cdn document as Krikit notes.

My review of renewing it:

PS - I did it in person at an office on Jul 5 and I received it by Fedex today Jul 14 - my guarantor and my references were called. They were asked questions about how they knew me , what I looked like and my US address.

Wow, I didn't think they really paid attention to the guarantors. I guess I had better make sure everyone knows my address. :)

Wow, I didn't think they really paid attention to the guarantors. I guess I had better make sure everyone knows my address. :)

Passport Canada called both my guarantors and asked very specific questions:

What colour is her hair?

What colour are her eyes?

How tall is she?

How long have you known her?

How/where did you meet her?

What is her address?

We had a good laugh because my one friend answered all the questions wrong, and the other told the guy that she would have to call me and ask me for my address and then call him back.

They gave me the passport anyway..... despite the fact that my friends of over 20 years don't know what I look like. laughing.gif

So glad to have read this, and know how successful it is. I plan to do the same thing this fall. (mine expires in April '11) And I wouldn't know how to have references and guarantor, unless I mailed it back and forth. *Note to self, use people who know me REALLY well*

M613 Congrats on sending of the AOS! I hope all goes well, and quickly for you. Are you hoping to go back to Canada later this year? It's strongly possible you could be getting your GC within a couple months or so. You may want to consider doing the same thing (if possible) and renewing it then.

M613-Good luck with your AOS and in gettig your passport renewed in the future too...

It won't directly impact your AOS info if you don't get it renewed....However.....

My suggestion to you would be to get your passport renewed BEFORE your AOS interview, as just in case they don't send your green card in time due to USCIS delays. If delays with the USCIS is the case (lol..which is not that uncommon actually), then you would need an I-551 Temporary Green Card stamp in your valid passport, in case you do need to travel back to Canada or elsewhere for the holidays or whatever else travel reasons....

So in that case, yes, you do need your passport renewed if you want to travel......

It only takes a few weeks to get a passport renewed/get a new passport.....So that shouldn't be a problem, and it's better to get that done now than it is to do this later while you have to worry about the AOS and other things...

Hope this helps too. Good luck on your journey.

Ant

P.S. I renewed my passport in-person in Canada last year too...It took about 2 weeks later for it to arrive in the mail here in the USA....Hope this helps too....

Seeing as how my getting a new passport doesn't ding my GC scenario in any way, I believe I will indeed get my new one in person in the Fall when I go back up (in early October). I'm from and will be going to Ottawa, a.k.a. the nerve center of such Canadian governmentey things

Thanks for all of the replies and the best wishes! I really hope my stringent carefulness + all of the awesome info I pulled off of here pays off re: the AOS! :)

Ha - so did my friend...she has coloured my hair about 10 times...maybe she forgot what I looked like :)

Also comical - my younger brother was like "should I say I've known you since birth or just since I remember you? " I told him to go with birth - even though those first 3 years might be a little fuzzy :)

Passport Canada called both my guarantors and asked very specific questions:

What colour is her hair?
