If people cut spending, government needs to cut spending.

The misconception that everyone has is that it has to be 'business as usual' for the state no matter how much they spend or raised their spending over the years. Sometimes you have to make cuts as well.

As I said, I don't see how the state is losing money other than mis-managemnt of said funds. Shopping is through the roof, at least in the major cities. DFW is growing and busier than ever, Houston the same, Austin and San Antonio... Not too sure about El Paso... Even a lot of the smaller communities have been growing and new business has been popping up.

I did note though, if services aren't being taxed, then they should be. This is an area of income they should be getting as it's still a sale...

Yes, but your budgets have alredy been cut by 5% with a requested 10% more - if your state is like mine, we don't have too many extras - so yes, you will feel the cut in government services.

and my point was, UT doesn't need that money. UT makes more money in a year than some Universities could hope to make in a decade.

Yes, they do! Like all state universities, their operating cost is way more than what they rake in with tuition. UT is not a for profit university. They break even because they have state money coming in.

No. UT is the last University in this country that needs a dime from the state. Pay attention to their TV deals, sponsorship deals, etc. Hell, UT is being sued by other schools in the Big 12 because they feel they should get the same cut of $$$ UT does.

Financial woes are the last thing UT has to worry about and probably never will.

Ummmm, coming from Tallahassee, with FSU in our neighborhood, the money UT has for sponsorship and TV deals and all that other stuff is for the sports side - football I assume. Title IX requires that what little monies that come from the state be equally divided amongst all the sports programs, thus, we have a boosters group that supports the multi-million $ football program, which I'm sure is probably the same thing that UT does.

Are you seriously trying to say that cutting spending for public school districts won't effect the level of education that children receive?

I'm seriously trying to say that schools spend too much money on extracurricular items than is necessary.

Even so, so what if you don't get new math books for 2 more years. So what if kids have to start buying a pen and paper and using that again in many schools instead of a computer to type things on! or have to use notebook paper for their assignment out of a book rather than a pre-printed out assignment. OMG! Devastating!

Well you clearly are ignorant as to how school budgets and the process is. But if you think that you can cut 15% of school districts budgets and expect the same sort of performance, then you are deluded.

Can't get much worse than it is now with kids being brainwashed into thinking the world is all about the damn standardized tests they are stuck with every couple of years....

Well, who do we have to blame for No Child Left Behind? Hmmmmmm. To be fair, it wasn't much better before that. Spending less on schools will make things worse. What will be the first things to go? Not expensive athletic programs, but music and arts, and of course firing of newer, less tenured teachers. So fewer creative outlets coupled with higher pupils per classroom ratio and fewer teachers. Yes, of course, that must be the proper course to improve our eductaion.
