The only foods I've ever seen at English BBQ's are sausages on the grill, my husband's foil packets of peppered mackerel, mini gherkins, garlic bread, the afore-mentioned cheese and onion on cocktail sticks- for sweets maybe a victoria sponge or a fondant covered cake.....not what an American would typically call a barbecue. We never once had Heinz baked beans at a BBQ- those are generally reserved for cheesy bean spuds in front of the television or served on top of toast. The one constant at any English bbq I've ever been to is I always leave hungry. When my father-in-law and his "old dear" were visiting us for 3 weeks in early June, they were overwhelmed by the amount of food and variety served at our American bbq's (but they loved it). My two English nieces have gotten very into S' mores at BBQ's since I introduced them to that a few years ago. We constantly send Hershey bars and graham crackers over to the UK.

See my timeline for all previous dates!

With thanks to all the helpful people who made this journey slightly more bearable.

You can buy Golden Syrup (Tate & Lyle) at World Market, you can also purchase Heinz BB's there too (not cheap).

I use Kroger's Vegetarian Beans with tomato sauce, taste as good as Heinz beanz and you get 5 cans for $2.00.

For a fancy Baked Bean feast at a barbie I make my own Barbeque beans which taste much better than any other bbq'd beans I have tasted (IMO) lol.

Try this:-

2 Cans of Baked Beans

1 onion (not sweet onion)

1 red pepper

1 green pepper

1 can chopped tomatoes (diced tomatoes)

Paprika

Chilli Powder

chop onions, peppers and fry in pan on stove until soft, add tomatoes and beans mix and simmer until peppers and onions soft (unless you like hard peppers etc) then add a sprinkle or paprika and chilli powder. Stir and simmer

Add more paprika and chilli powder if you like it hotter etc.
