Help with DS-156

Hi all,

We've been I129-F approved and my fiancee is working on the DS-156 (Dept. of State Nonimmigrant Visa Application). It will be filed in conjunction with a DS-156K (Fiancee supplement) so I'm not *TOO* worried but I have questions nonetheless. USCIS wasn't too much help... "Sir, I can't tell you what to put, I can only help you understand the question. For advice you can contact a professional form preparer or a community based organization."

#22 - Intended date of arrival?

You can only put a date here. We're waiting for gov't. approval. What date is that? Should I just put down an estimate? Early October?

#26 - How long do you intend to stay in the US?

"Indefinitely" is the answer but that would seem as though it would send red flags from California to Maine.

#27 - What is the purpose of your trip?

We have no idea what's appropriate here. "To get married" ? "To live" ?

#28 - Who will pay for your trip?

Both of us will, but for simplicity's sake I'm wondering if she should just put myself (the sponser) as I'm pretty well off.

rslifka,

The USCIS was more help than can reaonably be expected - the answer they gave you would have been right on had you been asking about a USCIS form, they shouldn't have answered you at all for this non-USCIS form.

#22 'to be determined' is an appropriate answer, written in by hand if necessary.

#26 'indefinite' is indeed a most appropriate answer - where do you see a 'red flag'?

#27 seems that you do have an idea after all, and appropriate onez at that. Just concatenate the thoughts - that is, afterall, the purpose of the visa for which you are applying.

#28 either answer is fine

Recognize that DS-156 is a generic form used for all non-immigrant visas - the questions can take on a different significance, or no significance at all, for the different classes of non-immigrant visa.
