It doesn't make it not true. Of a planet of over 6 billion, only roughly 400 million call Football, Soccer. Football was around long before, and is much more popular. I think most take offense that a sport which is derived from Rugby co opted the name which has little to no bearing on the actual sport. Suggesting to move on smacks of arrogance.

Rugby was one of many different versions of football in the UK during the 19th century. We used rugby football as our model and made our own version and just called it football, kept it simple. This had nothing to do with arrogance! But if you insist it did then maybe you should be hating on your peeps in the UK instead of us football fans here in the states. ;)

Now its offensive, good grief. If your offended by us calling it football then I say you suck it up and realize that were different here in America and no one is trying to offend anyone by calling it football.

You seem to miss the point completely. It is blatantly arrogant to take the name of a sport that is already popular and in existence and apply it to your own sport.

If you read on the beginnings of football, the forward pass was not made legal until 1906. Therefore the gameplay was very similar to rugby.

Why? Is it so that we can keep these PC nuts happy? That my friend is a mountain you will never get to the top of

So it's now a PC Nutjob idea to think that the proper sport named Football is the one being played at the World Cup now? I think you need some perspective.

I was just reading an article on the beginnings of American football etc...

First off, American football originated sometime in mid to late 1800s. Around the same time the British created official rules for their football. At the time there was a split of two kinds of football in England, the two separate types was Football and Rugby Football. Rugby football was for those who favored their hands more rather than their feet for athletic purposes. Even though football was a type of sport in which you use your feet. In Rugby at the time you scored by drop kicking the ball into the goal.

Now this is when American football is born. Both Football and Rugby football make their ways across the pond and become increasingly popular. But Rugby football became more popular. As the years went by in England, the word football in the name Rugby football became used less as people just used the term Rugby to refer to the sport easier and to prevent confusion from the original football, which was growing more popular. As for in the states, the results were almost opposite, the original football was losing ground in popularity against the Rugby football. This is where it gets tricky though, because its not quite certain why Americans choose to call Rugby football, football rather than following the British by calling it rugby. But according to some theories. America's version of Football Rugby had more footwork in it compared the Rugby football in England. Hence the name football was more likely to be kept rather than the name Rugby due to the fact that the Original football wasn’t gaining as much attention in America, as it was in England.

She was being sarcastic. She shares our disdain for the soccer dorks.

True...especially have disdain for people who make their profile pictures into soccer balls with their country's flag on them.
