I was wondering, does anyone know how long it takes before we receive the Visa from the US Consulate in Montreal once the case has been approved? One week? Two weeks? I live in Vancouver, BC (if that makes a difference in delivery time)

Hi Moshoo, my husband's visa was approved on Monday, mailed on Wednesday and he actually received it on Thursday and he lives in southern Ontario. This was all through Canadapost

Wow! That is fast. Thanks for sharing. I'm hoping that once approved, the visa will arrive within two weeks. I would like to move as soon as possible :)

I would give it give it at least 2 weeks before you book your flight. Most people get it within a week, but there have been cases where it has taken 2 weeks or more. Sometimes Montreal is on the ball and gets it out of the consulate in 2 or 3 days, but occasionally it can sit in the mailroom for more than that. Make sure you write down your expresspost tracking number so that you will be able to track your envelope.

It took my fiance a full 8 days (that included Saturday and Sunday) before he got his package in the mail. I wouldn't book a flight until you have the package in your hands. Too many things can go wrong with CanadaPost even after the package finally makes it out of the mailroom at the consulate.

Is it possible for the Consulate to give you the Visa while you wait or maybe the next business day so we can return to pick it up instead of waiting?

Montreal does not typically issue visas the day of (or the day following) the interview but it doesn't hurt to ask at the interview. I can only remember one or two filers over the past year or so that were able to return to pick up their visa the next day. So you can ask but I wouldn't make any plans based on getting it the day of or day after the interview. Good luck!

Similar to the last question, but maybe a little different...

My fiancee received a letter from the Montreal consulate dated 6/18/2010 that she is scheduled for a K-1 visa interview on 8/16/2010 at 8am. I suppose that is fast processing (I have to lookup the actual dates this evening and will post our timeline).

Question is, that following weekend (8/20/2010) we're both supposed to attend a friend's wedding in Pennslyvania (I'm in NY). Assuming she has no problem passing the interview, how long does the Montreal consulate take to issue the visa? That is, if the interview is on Monday morning, can she pick up her Visa later that day? or would she have to wait to receive it in the mail? If that's the case, she would have to return to her parent's house in Toronto for a few days while waiting for the passport to arrive.

Another option is to email the Consulate (assuming they reply fast) to ask the interview be scheduled for the following week if possible.

Any thoughts/concerns/etc. that we should be aware of?

Thanks for help!

As posted above you can always ask at the interview but they don't often issue the visa the same day. The expected time for arrival of visas can range from a few days to two weeks. We interviewed on a Tuesday and I had my visa by the Friday of that same week but you can see from the posters above they waited 8 days for theirs.

I would think very carefully about asking to reschedule your interview. It is not likely they would just reschedule for the next week; you may very well be put back in line and have a long wait for a new date. Some filers have reportedly been waiting months for a rescheduled date. Of course it doesn't hurt to try emailing the consulate but their reply rate is hit and miss.

Here is an example of why you never postpone an interview with Montreal:
