Time after POE until SSN received

Hello,

I will be entering on an IR1 immigrant visa and in the paperwork I signed at the embassy one was the DS-230 Part II question 43a I checked YES to "Do you want the Social Security Administration to assign you a SSN and issue a card?"

My question is how long will it take for an SSN to be assigned after POE? Is there any way to speed it up or maybe at least get a hold of the number before getting mailed a card or anything?

I know its possible to apply in person at a SSN office and thats pretty quick but unfortunately I already checked YES to this question, and I'm afraid it might be a slow option.

Many thanks all

SSA offices will probably not allow you to submit an application before you have been here three weeks, but there is nothing from stopping you from going into the office after you have been here a week to see if an SSN has been assigned. Be sure to take your passport with the I-551 stamp or your passport and I-551 card and birth certificate if one is handy when going into an SSA office to inquiry about your SSN or to apply,

I already had a SSN from my previous F-1 visa but I wasn't allowed to update it to a 'unrestricted' till 14 days post-POE had passed.

I went back and they updated my stats on 06/04. I should have received it by today.

I called and they said they will be 'inputting' it again into the system on Monday.

Hopefully, it'll work and I'll receive it in a couple of days.

I also checked yes on my DS230, but applied for my SSN at a local SSA office 5 days after POE.

No problem what so ever. It was pretty easy.
