In his farewell address to the nation in January 1989, Reagan beautifully wove his view of free trade and immigration into his vision of a free society: "I've spoken of the shining city all my political life, but I don't know if I ever quite communicated what I saw when I said it. But in my mind it was a tall, proud city built on rocks stronger than oceans, windswept, God-blessed and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace; a city with free ports that hummed with commerce and creativity. And if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and heart to get here."

It is amazing how this quote keeps turning up and interpruted to support illegal immigration. Reagan was for the rule of law and open borders for legal immigration no where has he stated he was in favor of illegal immigration except when he tried but failed to secure the borders using the 1986 immigration act.

That post I made was in response to the OP and the thread title. You're arguing something entirely different. Reagan's general view of immigration was a much more open approach than what the OP aspires to. There are still enough Libertarian minded individuals out there who embrace that same spirit that Reagan talked about.

We fully understand what your stating but your stating that reagan was for open immigration no laws just come here and become a US citizen.

I do apologize for any confusion i caused but the interpretation is always done outside the the rest of his views and statements

Reagan was for a World were the rule of law was followed and people immigrating to the USA did so following the laws and that there would be no worry about people trying to come here illegally but this is reality and he knew we needed styrong border laws. The laws he sought were laws to prevent illegal immigration across the borders not laws that prevented immigrants from coming or citizens from leaving.

He was not an advocate for open borders nor for giving amnesty to illegals(this was a compromise in 1986 to get stronger border controls).

The libertarians you speak of I am not sure you speak of the true Libertarian movement but here is what the Founder Murray RothBard states about President Reagan

Btw what I have read of this man is a lot of anger towards government in most of his publicized work or statements.

Libertarins are for legal immigration for their own reasons and there are some that believe easier immigration laws are needed to allow more immigrants to come to the USA. I am not a libertarian or a follower of that particular movement; although I do not doubt their are similarities in both the conservative and liberal views.
