On May 29, we went to one of the desi grocers around DC--to buy some toor (last time at that store, we were able to get an 8-lb packet--but this time no packets over 4-lb), curry leaves and a box of "Marathon Brand" mangoes (not really that nice, product of Mexico), which runs about $9 there. On the counter, I noticed boxes of "Royal Mangoes" which were imported from India (which gave these a leg-up on the Marathon--we didn't yet know the price of it). When we asked, it was $35 for the box (3.5 kg/7.7 lb)--and we found out by further looking on the side the mangoes within to be...Banganapallis (with the fruit-count written on the side). Well, we took a 9-count box home with us--and have so far consumed 6! :D:)

Followup; we finished the box on June 3 after my dad arrived here (he was sent here from CA by my sister so she and her family could go touring NYC, and will stay until 6/26). I tried that day to pick up another box--but there weren't any in stock.

When we returned from a retreat (6/4-6/6), I bought another box (10-count) on 6/8 which turned out not to be as nice as our first one (some of the fruits had soft or black spots which needed to be removed)--it would have been nice if the price had been reduced somewhat (say to $25.00) though admittedly it was a "not-happening".

Ohhh I so long to taste Indian mangoes.... I hesitantly bought a few at an Indian grocery store, but they turned out to be so sour and un-ripe. Now here I am searching for recipes for aam-papad/mango fruit leather, so I can at least put them to some use :)

I love mangoes, Dussehri is my favorite. I want Daniel and Adi to try some authentic Indian mangoes but it seems they will have to wait till we go to India during summers someday so they can taste a real mango.

Make some cilantro chutney, add a mango or 2 for extra zest..
