Answers should include the native script, (including Arabic or Chinese, for example) and the meaning.

I'm an English speaker from Canada, but American citizens (including my wife) absolutely destroy the word "cheque"

Cheque: noun: a paper financial instrument used to transfer smal-to-medium amounts of money from one bank account to another.

Check: verb: to investigate, inspect.

They AREN'T the same thing! :)

[And don't get me started on washroom/bathroom/restroom either! :) ]

DON'T PANIC

This thread is for the NON-US Citizen wives & husbands to tell about their US Citizen's

trouble pronouncing words and saying things correctly in their native language.

Both members of the couple can be English-speaking but this is for the foreign one

to tell about the way the American pronounces words & uses English or the foreign

language of their home country.

My husband doesn't post here anymore but I can tell you which words I have a really hard time with.

One is the Hindi word for car. मोटरगाडी (I hope that script is right, copied it from a website). In Roman script it's motor gaadi. The gaadi part is where I fail! The d is not the English d, more of an r and soft d sound that I fail at still despite trying lots and lots of times. I get it right maybe 1 out of 10 times.

Also the word dhanyavad धन्यवाद which means thank you, the h after letters gives me problems and the whole word I just can't say the right way. I have tried over and over! I say it anyway and in India they knew what I meant at least. :P

A huge advantage for me is that in India many people speak fluent English and most of the signs in the cities are in English!

Married since 9-18-04(All K1 visa & GC details in timeline.)

Interesting; no harm in the USC posting here about their challenges with their SO's languagegood.gif

My other thread is for problems regarding English only.
