2.could be a bad graphics card

To troubleshoot this, you would need to open the cpu case and remove graphics card from AGP(Brown slot) Slot and installed it on one of the PCI SLOTS (usually color coded white and have five of them per case). Plug the monitor and reboot the system. If it works, then it is a bad AGP slot. If still a no go, it very well could be a bad graphics card.

If that were done, a new graphics card would be REQUIRED. Probably a new motherboard, too, since AGP slots and PCI slots are not only physically different, but also use different voltages. Both would likely get toasted following this "test".

here's another test that comes to mind

As you can see, I have one of the cheaper PCI-x cards. I do web design, graphic design, and hardware sales and repair. I don't do any gaming at all. As such, I don't need a super-fast graphics card, just one that will do dual monitors and handle 500MB graphics manipulation. The difference between the AGP card I had (NVidia MX4000) and this one is amazing. I can use photoshop on one monitor and watch a DVD on the other monitor without a single hiccup. I suppose one day I'll upgrade the video card.... I'll probably get a Quadro when I do. Again, graphics, not gaming.

Graphics for gaming everyone goes for the card and forgets about the other components, such as a really good monitor that supports the optimal resolution, and having enough CPU power and RAM.

I just trip when I see some dude fork over 500 bucks for a high end video card and then hook it up to some piece of ####### VGA monitor. Or try and force a 1st Gen Pentium IV to support the latest bells and whistles of today's games.

anyway--eventually when you start playing online games competitively you end up turning off all the extra shinney graphics features in a desire to increase real-time playing and cut down on the dreaded lag. So if it looks good enough then its probably good enough--that's my way of picking a graphics solution--and usually that is more dependent on the monitor having a really good resolution support--put the most money on the monitor and less so on the graphics card.

I've always giggled at that myself. A guy at work has dual NVidia video cards....not sure what models.... in an SLI set-up. He spent $700 for the video cards. His monitor? A 1998 Gateway 19" CRT.

Gotta be careful with LCDs also. Some of them are SLOW! 8ms is good. 4ms is better. Really cheap ones are usually 16ms or slower (I've seen 30ms on a certain manufacturer's "bundled" LCD monitor. Try watching a DVD on that!)
