Spring Cleaning....Canadian documents...

Hi Everyone,

Ok, so spring is in the air, and it's time to do some spring cleaning!

So far so good, as we've finished cleaning most of the house...

But as I was cleaning, I was wondering:

Should I keep my old Canadian tax returns?

Which pages should I keep? Front pages only? Or all of it?

How long am I supposed to keep them for?

Or should I throw them out?

What happens if I don't keep them?

Will Revenue Canada go after me for past returns?

Would I ever need my Canadian tax returns, for any other reason?

It's about 100+ pages or so in total, ranging from years 2000-2006, from when I was a student with no/little income...

I don't owe any Canadian taxes.......

I don't plan on living in Canada anymore...(lol..though I still visit from time to time)....

What other Canadian documents should I keep/throw out? What are the essentials? What are the throw-aways/shredder-worthy?

Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

2010 ( 1 Month) "Voted": US Citizen NYS Voter's Registration Card.

rule of thumb for me is everything from the last 10 years..i think it's 7 for most govt stuff etc.

I keep all of my bills for 5 years, but as Kimbear posted taxes should be kept for 7 years. That being said I have kept every tax return I submitted since I have been a working adult. I just have them organized in a plastic storage container...doesn't really take up that much space.

I went through a big purge before moving down and sticking to the above schedule. I went through again this past winter and got rid of most of the Canadian stuff now except for the things to keep indefinitely or what might be useful to remember.

I agree. I used to run a small business back in Vancouver a long time ago, and it was a must that I kept all the documents for 7 years, including tax stuff. So, now I just keep anything related to the government for 7 years. Even Royal Bank told me that, when I switched to paperless for monthly statements, I would be able to retrieve old records in their database only as far as 7 years.

It took only two (2) months to be approved. Hooray!

Timeline

December 5, 2009 - I-485 application was submitted.

January 12, 2010 - I-485 application was re-submitted due to address error.

January 20, 2010 - I-485 application receipt notice arrived.

January 25, 2010 - Biometrics notice arrived.

February 9, 2010 - Biometrics taken at local USCIS office.

March 5, 2010 - Initial Interview notice arrived.

April 15, 2010 - Employment Authorization Card arrived out of blue.

April 29, 2010 - Initial Interview scheduled and... APPROVED!!! :) Conditional GC will arrive in 2-3 weeks.

April 30, 2010 - SSN reactivated. Newly printed card will arrive in 3-5 days.

May 7, 2010 - Welcome Notice arrived! Hooray! :)

May 8, 2010 - Freshly printed SSN card arrived.

May 26, 2010 - Conditional GC issued.

June 1, 2010 - Conditional GC ARRIVED! Yippee! :)

June 2, 2010 - SSN upgraded. Newly printed card will arrive in a week.

June 9, 2010 - Freshly printed SSN arrived.

October 10, 2011 - I-751 petition was submitted.

October 18, 2011 - I-751 petition was returned. It turned out to be USCIS's error sending it back to me.

October 19, 2011 - I-751 petition was re-submitted.

October 26, 2011 - I-751 petition receipt notice arrived.

November 18, 2011 - Biometrics taken at local USCIS office.

December 27, 2011 - I-751 petition Approval letter was issued.

December 28, 2011 - I-751 petition Approval letter arrived

December 29, 2011 - GC was issued.

December 30, 2011 - GC arrived.

Great to know too, that "7 years" is the magic mark for keeping financial related documents (and other documents to be determined accordingly).....

I never knew about that before...but now I know...Great to learn something new every day...;)

Lol..Back to spring cleaning for me....Uggh... :wacko:

Sigh...Too bad I have to keep those tax returns...Oh well....I'll wait another few years..and then ask the same question again...lol...Better safe than sorry, I suppose.....
