Hey all,

I'm finally beginning to plan a trip to visit my parents in Canada around mid May(I have received my AP, EAD AND SSN, just waiting on my GC now). I was wondering what it's like leaving the US, and re-entering once the vacation is done? I will be flying to Buffalo NY where my parents would pick me up at the air port and drive over thr boreder (it will aslo be the same thing on the way back)... unless my husband and I choose to drive. The only way we would be driving back is if my husband and I buy my dad's car. He has been looking to sell it for a while now. Since my husband and I need a car it would be the perfect solution for us and my parents. The only thing is I know nothing about bringing a car to the US and what kind of documentation I would be needing? or if there are any fees? or if it would pose a problem at the border? (my dad's car is paid off, great condition and passed all testing for smog, oil and etc.) If I can get the information needed down, it would be extremely helpful.

I'm going to move your topic from Working and Travelling to the Canada forum. There are tons of threads there on this subject if you do a search. Also at the top of the forum is a pinned topic - Canada Immigration Guide - links there to info as well.

Basically - if it is a U.S. or Canadian made car all you need is a letter of compliance from the manufacturer, when you cross back over the border, present it and say you would like to import your car.

thank you for your help! How does one go about getting a letter of compliance? I believe the car is 1997-1999 Ford Sable or Mecury. Or would my dad (the owner have something like that when he purchased the car?)

He will need to contact a Ford dealer, they will request it - there is a charge - around $100.

That's not too bad, I was thinking it would cost more than that...is there anything else that I would need?
