Canadian PR Card

Ok, so as my POE rapidly approaches, all of these random "OMG..WHAT NOW?" moments are popping up. I am a canadian permanent resident (South African citizen). Do I have to let the Canadian government know that I am leaving? And also, does this mean that I will have to apply for a canadian visitors visa when I want to visit my family up here? (At least until I get my citizenship in the states).

Thank you! (Eventually I will cross the border and be out of everyones hair!).

Invictus..

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the Pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll.

I am the master of my fate:

I am the captain of my soul.

Hi Coralie. I don't know the answers to all of your questions (I'm not sure if you need to tell Canada that you are leaving), but as for visiting family in Canada, once you have your Green Card in hand, this will not be a problem, and you will not need a visitor's visa. Info found here:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp#exemptions

Many people do not require a visa to visit Canada. These include:

persons lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence who are in possession of their alien registration card (Green card) or can provide other evidence of permanent residence

I wouldn't worry about it. Why would you give it up before you have to? To keep it you need to be living in Canada at least 2 years out of the last 5. So technically you can worry about it in 2 years :hehe: (just kidding, you don't have to worry about it even then - you will no longer be a PR).

Don't know when your Canadian PR card expires but just don't renew it.

That said, when entering Canada you should use your U.S. PR card along with your passport - then you don't have to explain to them what you are up to.

Keeping your permanent resident status

Your permanent resident status allows you to live in Canada, but there is also a time limit on how long you can live outside the country. To keep your status as a permanent resident, you must live in Canada for at least two years within a five-year period.

I have a Canadian PR too and was told by the consul who interviewed me that I have to give it up. I think he may mean that I can't get citizenship in one country, then run across the border to get another citizenship, which makes sense. Anyway, I am not sure where to give my Canadian PR card to, but it expires next year, so I am just going to let it expire. I am a little worried about crossing the border, as my passport is still in my maiden name, but I will try to get it changed to my married name so both that and my green card are under the same name.

I also think that they will still know that you've held or hold a Canadian PR if you enter Canada to visit.

Edit: And Coralie, you won't be dealing with any Canadian customs as you cross the American border... so if you are worried about that, don't be :)
