Getting a US credit card (For TD Canada Visa holders)

Just wanted to let everyone know a little tidbit of information I learned today that will hopefully come in handy (for you and me!).

TD Bank (US) can pull and use your Canadian credit history using your TD Canada visa to apply for a card here in the US.

I've been trying everything (short of a secured bank card) to get approved for a credit card - department stores, banks, gas cards. Nobody wants me, haha. American Express, for whatever reason, sees my account as being activated in June of last year, so I haven't hit the full twelve months they require to transfer it. So I figured I'd give TD Bank a call and see if they could do anything for me.

The woman at their credit card center said they they can pull our Canadian history and apply for a US card based on it if we go into a branch and speak with one of their reps. Well that didn't work for me, as Orlando isn't close to any branches. So she suggested I call up my nearest branch and see if I couldn't persuade them to do it over the phone. Called them up, explained my difficulties and he was more than happy to take down all of my info and send it their the powers that be to pull my credit history and see if they can approve me.

What I needed:

-TD Canada Visa account details (account holder name, SIN, address listed on account, account number and card type)

-Current details (married name, US address, SSN, employment details [didn't have any], phone number)

I was told that, in 5-10 days I can call the credit card center (first place I called) and see if I've been approved. If they require any other information, they will call me. Hopefully it'll work out for the best, as it's truly, truly frustrating to know that I've got nothing working for my credit score right now.

Should note that, although I used my TD Canada visa, I don't see why it wouldn't be worth a shot to have them pull your credit history regardless and apply like that.

Anyhow, just thought I'd share.

Have you tried applying for the Capital One card? I was denied on my first try and then a couple months later they sent me a letter telling me to re-apply and that I'd be approved... so I did and I got a card a few months later. I don't know if it's just been dumb luck or what, but Chase offered me a Visa with no interest for 6 months shortly after I got my Capital One card.... Chase is my bank here. When I went to go open up a savings account they approved me on the spot. The guy at the bank said it might have been because of the regular direct deposits and joint account I have with my husband... but who knows!

The TD Card would be good though. Hope it works out.

Good advice about the TD Visa card and account information.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Capital One denied me.

Chase is our bank as well. Our banker told us that I could apply for one of their cards as soon as another card had approved me and I accumulated some spending on it.

I've been getting letters from Capital One telling me to apply for a card. I think I've got 4 letters from them in the last 3 weeks, its ridiculous. I didn't apply before because I didn't have any income to report, but I'm thinking maybe I should try now just to see where it goes. Worse case scenario they just deny it, right?

I don't really need it, since I have several cards my husband added me on, but it would be nice to build my credit a little better. We're thinking about buying a new car sometime in the next few months, and it would be nice to be able to get it in my name.

Do you need to be a TD Canada customer to get the TD US card Sam? I've never had TD, so I'm not sure if that would be an option for me.

I was actually able to get a Victoria's Secret charge card a few months after being in the US without any credit to speak of or any incoming income. It's only good in their stores, but if any of you spend a lot of money at VS it might be an option!

If only VS purchases didn't fall under the "luxury" items I'm trying to steer hubby from blowing cash on right now.

I don't know if you have to be a customer of theirs or not. They might be more apt to help if you are, but you'd think if they're able to tap into the CAN credit bureaus, they can do so regardless.

I got a US American Express card when I was in US on a TN visa. It was really easy, but I guess I had met the 12 month criteria you referred to @Sam and Ben. I literally called American Express, asked for a US card, they got my credit history from my Canadian Amex, confirmed some details and I had a card mailed to me with the same credit limit amount as my Canadian Amex. Also but the Blue Sky Amex which has no fees....

Sam&Ben, thanks for that info! My husband still banks with TD and has a credit card with them in Canada. He really wants to get a US card so there will be less fees and that is really invaluable information for him.

Will this allow you to just get a Credit Card in US or does it also allow you to get your credit history transferred as well?

I was able to apply and get an unsecured Credit Card from my bank, Wells Fargo, as soon as I got my SSN. My banker did say that they denied it initially but he was able to talk them out and get it approved.

I banked with TD back in Canada for 10 years.
