That ONE blue collar worker DOES NOT earn 6.3K for a weeks worth of work.

The company receives that money, sure, but NOT the worker.

A large portion of tradesmen are self-employed in Australia. Actually, the going rate for hiring skilled tradesmen is a good $35 an hour there.

What's to yawn about? You made an assumption and it was wrong.

Nope - yer math didn't work.

6.3K for a week to demolish a bathroom

vs

35 X 50 hrs = 1750 in labour costs for a 'skilled worker'.

I'm not missing anything here, but you're making assumptions that just aren't holding water.

Pick one or the other for the bathroom demolition, and quit yer b|tching.

No, what I said is that the $35 is the general rate for a business to employee an additional hand skilled in a trade.

The $6.3K is the lowest price they could find for someone to remove the bathroom. And that was after calling seven or so contractors.

Yawn all you like. Their economy is doing well, ironically thanks to huge investments from your SO's mother country and fellow wealthy investors. It's why an absolute ####### box house is worth more than 2.5 homes in Houston. Some say what does that mean or prove anyway. A lot actually considering Australia has one of the lowest population densities in the entire world.

Boo Yah, if people make a lot and everything costs a lot, how is that any better than people making little and things costing little? You're getting hung up on nominal amounts when what you should be focusing on is purchasing power.

It's relative considering the high quality of life.

The overall point is that unfettered immigration for a country of 308 million with 50 plus million living in poverty and an 18% actual unemployment rate, when considering the underemployed, is driving down wages and the quality of life. To the contrary, the opposite is having the opposite affect on wages and employment abroad. The thought that bringing in more poor people will improve the situation or quality of life does not hold any water for the middle class or those living in poverty.
