Well, we don;t know the exact wording of the email. But I agree that the uninviting should be done in a polite way.

I think you have the right to feel a bit offended. The wife should sort it out with her husband and not trouble you with it. Then whatever decision they come up with if it is different from his email, he should be the one telling you, not his wife. I don't understand why she would be so bold to tell you that she had different plans from what her husband told you. Bad form.

Yes, the husband should have cleared it with the wife first, but I actually think she did the right thing in letting everyone know that dinner wasn't going to happen as soon as she knew. And really, it is her choice since it's her birthday and if she had an idea of how she wanted to spend it, she should be able to spend it that way without everyone feeling left out.

She (the b-day girl) can slap her husband then for not consulting her first. ;) Although, maybe he was thinking of surprising her by organizing a dinner party with all her friends?

hehehe.

here's the e-mail

I just talked to [my husband] and he told me what is going on with Saturday night, and I wanted to talk to you about it. I think he was trying to make this a nice surprise for me for my birthday, and he told me that you guys rearranged your plans for Tour de Pain to be able to make it, so I feel SO BAD about saying this, but I think my sister and I were really looking forward to it being just us. I feel bad because it's her birthday, too, and I don't want to overwhelm her and her bf with too many people they don't know very well. I would LOVE for you guys to meet us out later at Square One, though.

Caroline, I am SO SORRY about this...I didn't know he was planning to do this, and he didn't, of course, foresee the whole Sarah issue (which is a big one for me), and I feel so bad that there just is not a good way to handle this. I hope you will not be mad at me, and I hope that you guys will meet us for lots of drinks afterwards.

Please please please please please don't be mad at me.

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

I think she should slap him! And not everyone likes surprise parties. I'd be really annoyed if someone put me on the spot like that and have been sure to make sure that my husband is fully aware of this!

Awww you have to forgive her for that one...she was really sweet about it and she has a good reason. Just whatever you do, don't make her feel bad about it b/c she probably already does.

That seems a very polite letter to me - she apologises a number of times and recognises that you might be angry with her, but she's making her feelings and wishes clear and I for one would respect her for doing that.

...us guys can't win.

BTW - anybody here watch Lucky Louie on HBO? It's sort of a modern day 'Honeymooners.' There was a recent episode where Louie brings home some red roses for his wife, but his wife reminds him that she doesn't like red roses and that she's told him that. He gets upset because he thinks she should thank him for the thought, but she thinks he was being thoughtless to forget how much she dislikes red roses. He ends up calling her an ungrateful c**t and the whole thing escalates out of control.
