I-131 questions

My wife applied on February 8th for an I-131 (along with her I-485 and accompanying documents) with her son to go back home and visit family in Japan. The estimated time to process an I-131 is 3 months from according to the USCIS website but we need to buy her tickets now for May.

My questions are these..

Do they often deny I-131 requests? We documented on her I-131 request her mothers poor health hoping that would be enough to get approved.

Another question. In her I-131 we put 3 weeks but put the dates on there as an estimated time for leaving the country. Are they strict upon re-entry that those dates match or if she exceeds 3 weeks or the ending date will she be denied entry?

Thank you.

My I-131, filed in October, was approved in 46 days. One of the reasons for traveling I gave was "Possible future medical emergencies involving my elderly grandmother." It seemed to work fine.

My understanding is that I-131 requests are virtually never denied as long as there is some kind of half-way reasonable reason given for the future travel. In more than a year of posting here I've never heard of an I-131 being denied.

As far as I know there is absolutely no enforcement, or even particular interest, let alone follow up, regarding whether or not you actually end up traveling anytime near the date of intended travel you give them, or whether you trip lasts anything close to your stated intended travel duration. They understand that plans can change. Indeed, given how quickly GC's are being processed these days, the vast majority of issued AP documents are never even used. As long as you return to the US prior to the expiry date written on the AP document, it shouldn't matter at all, especially if the AP document states that it is good for multiple trips (as you should have requested when you filled out the I-131).

All they're looking for on the I-131 is a reasonable, reasonably probable travel scenario that you would plausibly need an AP document for. They aren't terribly interested, I think, in whether the depicted scenario ever actually comes to pass, as long as it is a realistic possibility, and therefore a legitimate reason to want an AP document, at the time of application.
