Hey all,

I recently got my EAD in the mail, and went to apply for an SSN today so that I can begin hunting for jobs. The lady at the SSN office filled everything in on her computer for me, and was going to process the SSN for me today. She had me look it over, and re-entered the information. Finally she told me that she got a prompt that the Department of Homeland Security had to okay/validate the application. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same situation? I was suppose to apply for an SSN with my EAD right?

Sincerely, C&N

On the visa application Form DS-230 (expires 7/31/2007), you saw the following offer:

"Do you want the Social Security Administration to assign you an SSN (and issue a card) or issue you a new card (if you have an SSN)? You must answer "Yes" to this question and to the "Consent To Disclosure" in order to receive an SSN and/or card."

Please note that this program is ONLY for Immigrant Visa holders (CR-1, etc). If you checked this box, a Social Security number will NOT be generated for you if you are a K-visa holder. As a K-visa holder, use the following guide to get your first, or replacement, Social Security number/card. If you have ever had a Social Security number, that is your number for life; you will need to visit your SSA office to get new card with the same number.

This whole SSN business has taken on a mystique for me. We did not K process at all just CR-1 which stumps me to no end on why we did not receive SS card (based on ticking the DS230 box appropriately).

Yesterday we were at the SSA card production centre in our adjacent state and the interviewer was unable to answer my simple question of where's the card given that we ticked the box.(this is from VJ)

We completed the form and we understand that my card will arrive sometime in the next 3 weeks or so.

In addition to this I KNOW from past experience that they CAN give you the number right away (before your card comes) but the person dealing with me seemed to think that this was impossible. I felt as if I was in a Monty Python skit yesterday with no possible resolution.

About two weeks ago I asked if there was ANYONE who had a positive outcome using the ''tickbox'' on the DS230 and the total zero response made me realize that I just had to go in person to SSA.

I have gleaned the posts on all forums and there seem to be many varied responses ranging from getting the number right away (before the card arrives) so that you can complete administrative tasks such as filing taxes (our concern) and/or opening bank accounts.

Getting my GC was a huge sigh of relief and I so very much want to comply with all of my ''tax'' requirements as well (I realize we can file an extension).
