Add Rep. Vic Snyder (D-AR) to the growing list of lawmakers saying they've received death threats in the wake of health care reform becoming law.

The Associated Press reports that Snyder was told about a letter by the Capitol Police on Tuesday saying he's a target for assassination. The police intercepted the letter.

Snyder read from a copy of the original saying: "It is apparent that it will take a few assassinations to stop Obamacare. Militia central has selected you for assassination. If we cannot stalk and find you in Washington, D.C., we will get you in Little Rock."

You want to scare a politician into reconsidering their position, you threaten to vote against them. Threatening to harm them or their family is pure thuggery.

Not really. Fear makes them think twice about their vote all the time. Threatening their 'position' only makes them think about their vote in the few months leading up to an election/only if they really care about getting re-elected.

On a side note, I think these kinds of threats happen to most politicians. The Dems are just exploiting them right now.

The key and how the first amendment is or is not protected here all depends on how relevant it is to you actually carrying out the threat.

If it's considered a 'true threat' (i/e - one you'll actually probable to carry out) then the first amendment will not protect you in that case.

However, in a situation where the threat is just that, 'a threat' with no real intention shown to actually follow through with such measures, then the first amendment statute stands.

The only fear that has a place in democracy is the fear of not getting re-elected. Fear of or threats of violence from the people is just weak.

Unfortunately, human nature dictates that we only learn/understand things from a violent perspective.

You can be a peace loving hippie all you want, but you still need to break some windows to get people's attention.

Do you think the American people would have ever gone for WWI had the Lusitania not been sent out as a sacrifice to boil people to call for retribution?

DO you think the American people would have wanted to be in WWII if it weren't for Pearl Harbor?

We are a violent species who understands violence above all else. When we are peaceful and in semi-agreement on things we can resolve issues with words. However when there's a stark disagreement in which neither side wants to bend, it usually takes a war to decide the continued fate of man kind.

Democracy is not war. You don't like how a solution to a particular issue turns out, vote for someone else. If the majority of the people don't agree with you and elect representatives who oppose the style of government you want, put up with it or GTFO. Government is not about what you as an individual wants, its about what the majority wants.

If we let a group of people bully others with violence, we might as well rename our country to Afghanistan. As Dan said, violence has no place in a civilized democratic society of today.
