Kind of an odd question

I just got an iphone -- it's craploads of fun BUT when i'm texting to Canada, do I have to put a 1 in front? I don't remember having to do that to text to the US from canada but when I tried to send my best friend a text message it came back saying please use proper 10 digit code. Okay. tried that, still didn't work.

I don't want to use up all my international texts trying this . Anyone with an iphone that texts to Canada?

Odd question, I know...

What's a girl with no job doign buying an iphone? I don't buy shoes, how's that for justification!

;P

1 + area code + number should do it. I do it all the time to the US and from the US back to Canada when I have my US pay-as-you-go SIM plugged into the phone. If you are doing that, and if the text is not going through, maybe its something to do with the network, and you need to contact AT&T...

I don't have an iphone, but I text to Canada all the time and I've never had to put a 1 in front of the number. Maybe it has something to do with your service provider? What company do you use in the US? I dunno, that's pretty weird...

An iphone is much more useful then shoes any day :P

It has to do with whether or not your service provider recognizes texts to Canada as domestic or international. If you get the same message when trying to send to multiple people in Canada, that's likely the case. Perhaps there's a different package you can get that would include texts to Canada or within North America for the same price?

Humm, good point Sam. I have Verizon and texts to Canada don't count as international, so that would explain why I've never had a problem without the 1. Smart!

+1! :P

Hey lgg,

My Sister and her Husband had a somewhat/kind of similar thing happen to them a few weeks ago (I don't remember who they have their service with). But anyway, he calls U.S. and Canadian numbers all the time. Suddenly one day, he can't call Canada anymore - porquoi?

So she calls them and after discussing it with them over several phone calls (took a week or more to get it straightened out) the solution was he needed a new SIM card.

So i'm just throwing that out there as a possible solution in case you get the run around (I hope you don't!)

Oh yeah, we got a plan that includes "international texts' as Canada is considered international. Will try it again tomorrow or I'll call. But yeah, I would get anyone to check the rates --- without this plan, text messages would be obscene!

:D

In cost that is. Not in content.

Up until this last weekend, we had AT&T, and always had to use 1+ area code then the number to call/text canada.

iPhone :bonk:

I'm on AT&T as well, via iPhone, and do not have any 1s at the beginning of saved Canadian numbers, yet texts and phone calls go through with no problem... *shrug*:blink:

Does your friend or family have a blackberry back in Canada? If they do there's a cool iphone app (and blackberry app) called Whatsapp. It's basically a text messaging app that allows you to send free text messages to any blackberry or iphone all over the world. I have an iphone and I use it to text my best friend in the UK who has a blackberry. I love it!!
