I don't imagine Thoreau is widely read in Australia, but he was required reading for the activist left in the '60's, even inspiring a Canadian comic strip writer:

Canadian?? I should think not. Gary Trudeau is no Canadian. Just because he shares a surname with one of the most famous Canadian Prime Ministers does not give him citizenship. He's a Yank all right.

Actually, he was an "effeminate" anarchist. But, his works did inspire the social activists of the 1960's, and the enviro-terrorists of modern times. One of the reason the left is so mentally deranged, is that they can't figure out exactly what they are, good little Maoists, or tree hugging anarchists.

While historical social activist movements may be praised by the Left, their actions were unequivocally anarchic at the time. The best example is MLK, he was a civil anarchist, not a liberal.
