Feeling Very Overwhelmed

I can't believe that I'm actually introducing myself but here goes. My immigration journey may well be one of the weirdest journeys ever! I came to the US in 1998 with my then two children. I was partner to an american who said it would be easy for me to get my papers once in the US. That didn't happen. I fell pregnant practically as soon as I arrived and ended up overstaying.

Fast forward 12 years and to my surprise here I am about to begin this adjustment journey with the man that Im proud to call my husband. Im from the UK (Jamaican parentage) and he is a New York born Puerto Rican.

Id been in relationships before now but the theme used to be the same. When ever I didn't want to be with the person;they would threaten to call immigration on me. I decided that I just wasn't going to tell anyone about my status and ride it out till there was some kind of immigration reform. Well that didn't happen and after a terrible tragedy last year....I was ready to pack up and leave. I just felt like it was too much bad stuff but then I met my husband. I wasn't expecting it. I guess thats how it works at times but he turned out to be exactly what I needed.

We married last year June 2009 and to be honest I still wasn't sure if I wanted to adjust as an immediate spouse. It sounds weird, I know, but I was burned and I didn't know if I wanted to place something so important in the hands of anyone to be honest He's great with my children, great to me and most importantly I love him to pieces(Even if he speaks in spanish to me JUST to make fun of me as I don't understand lol).

my sweet friend new friend le tme tell you puertio rico is demanding statehood but usa i feel treatthem as not good . and uk is good and ye sall emiggration i feel cia or fbi invesigates they really discriminate because they have to . you kno puerto rico much drug trade and girls do some works not good and same so why u all mention ur father mother nationalitie sist i must .

you hsould write to british embassy only they shoudlget your visa cleared your british even then you have delays my god your not terrorist then why they delay you .

my friend you ask the uk embassy why their natiionality is not respected i namerica and ask same to us consulate right its an insult of england .

It sounds like you are on the right path now. Once your AOS application is approved your overstay will be forgiven. You've been very lucky not to have had problems with immigration up until now, and finally you have met a man who you love and who loves you. I'm glad life it back on track for you at last.

I will also add it would be a good idea to ignore the advice in the two posts directly above this one and focus on completing the US immigration process - but you knew that already, I suspect .

My husband is Puerto Rican in ethnicity but he is an American citizen.He works for the Government and so has passed a background check already in order to do what he does. Im not really sure what you were saying but thank you regardless.

It sounds like you are on the right path now. Once your AOS application is approved your overstay will be forgiven. You've been very lucky not to have had problems with immigration up until now, and finally you have met a man who you love and who loves you. I'm glad life it back on track for you at last.

I will also add it would be a good idea to ignore the advice in the two posts directly above this one and focus on completing the US immigration process - but you knew that already, I suspect .

Thanks for the kind words.I have been here since 1998 and I guess it is fortunate that I managed to be here this long without any problems. Thankfully my husband is pretty cool and Im looking forward to living life "outside of the shadows" in the very near future.I really had no idea what the poster was speaking about. I figured every board has its resident troll.

I do have a question that is quite forward, but I'm dying to know....when you fall out of status, how do you work, pay bills, etc?

I'm so joyful to hear that you have a happy ending to your journey!!!! It must feel like a real affirmation to have someone who loves you and equally important, to feel secure in the country in which you live.

I am very happy that you found a way to navigate through this painfully broken system
