Cover letter for I-485 and I-130

We filed I-485 and I-130 to Chicago in two separate envelopes and they both got rejected. Now we are getting ready to file them together. Do I need two cover letters one for I-485 and one for I-130? Or do I just need one cover letter?

Cover letters are not required for either application. They are voluntary, not mandatory. We didn't use a cover letter for our AOS applications (mine and my daughters) and got approved without a problem.

Shami,

But you do, as you found out the hard way, need to mail them in the same envelope. The person who opened and looked over your I-485 package had no way of knowing that you had submitted the I-130.

But what was the reason given for returning the I-130?

The reason for rejection was we filed I-130 and I-485 in two seperate packages. So I-130 was rejected because we mailed it to Chicago, but they didn't know we filed I-485 and I-130. So they thought I-130 should have gone to Nebraska. I-485 was rejected because it did not have I-130.

I mailed off my I-485 and I-130 yesterday. I did a cover/contents page for both of them and then did an overall coverpage saying Original Submission I-485 and I-30 filed concurrently and then used a big paperclip to hold it all together. Even though I did a contents for both I tried to keep everything as simple as possible so I wasn't overloading them with tabs and post-its and explanations etc.

Shami,

Thanks, I should have thought of that. (You may be lucky that Chicago returned the petition to you to resubmit rather than forwarding it on to Nebraska.)
