AMEX is not as widely accepted as VISA or MASTERCARD. If you have a VISA or MC, I suggest you bring that card instead.

If you're staying in Manila, you can survive with just a credit card, but I suggest you have some cash with you. 1000 Php a day would be reasonable if you stay within the metro. Less perhaps if you're staying in the province.

im going to the philippines in may and i mostly relying on my credit card for expenses so my question is can the philippines use american express.

I just came back from the Philippines in december. Was in Calumpit and i had cash I think you will find that much better because the exchange rates are great and you will get more for your money.I took a thousand in cash and a credit card which you can use anywhere there...

I had hassle when I went last time with cash. Three places I tried to exchange were very picky about the condition of the U.S. bills. They only wanted pristine bills. Plus I had to fill out paperwork at two places. I eventually found a place that took all the rest of my bills no problem but I was kind of stressing for a while

AMEX should be alright if you will stay in fine hotels in Metro Manila and shop in boutiques and big malls , but I would suggest that you also bring

dollars ( crispy new ones). You can exchange them in Malls like SM , but they want the new ones so they can easily detect if it is real or not.You can use peso in paying for your food and transportation.

But if you are staying in a province credit card is not recommended that much, you should have cash and NEVER use traveler's check. they will not honor that.

Master and visa would be no problem to use in Metro Manila and big malls

American Express is not widely accepted in the Philippines. I used my visa card and my ATM card for everything. My visa card took care of the big bills like the hotel bills. I used my ATM card to keep some pesos in my pocket for everything else. There seems to be a 10,000 Php limit at the cash machines.

We have needed more than 10,000 Php on several occassions. We were able to use the same ATM card 4 times before it refused the card. Since Marlene has a different ATM card for the same account, we have been able to get 80,000 Php in a single visit to the ATM.

Wow...that's a lot of cash to be walking around with! What were you doing...building a house?

I never used my ATM card twice (or more) in a single day.

Some of the US banks will not authorize ATM transactions overseas unless you tell them when you will be out of country, where you are going, and when you expect to be back. I have Bank of the West, and that is what they told me a few months ago. Things are starting to tighten up a bit this year.

If your fiancee (or you) has (have) relatives who are willing to buy your USD then instead of going to a bank or freestanding FOREX store, have them change your money for you. Just follow the published Central Bank rate. Our relatives do this often as it is the most hassle free way to have your dollars exchanged.

There are some establishment that accepts american express (AMEX). You could see in their entrance a notice that AMEX is accepted in their establishment. BTW, I'm referring to Manila, makati, ortigas area. If you dont see any notice, you have to ask first before you transact your business.

I had an international dollar AMEX account in the philippines before. If you are going to the province, 4- 5 star resort/hotels do accept them.

If you need cash advance, you could withdraw from any ATM showing PLUS word similar to the one printed in your AMEX card. I could be wrong with the PLUS word, just look in your credit card.

If you are in the Philippines, try to have Visa or better yet, cash.
