Immigrating to the U.S. from Germany

I haven't been in Germany since 1994, but since I still have an apartment, I'm still "gemeldet" which, by the way, is necessary to keep your Personalausweis and German driver license "legal."

When my husband and I moved to Germany because of military orders, I was't "gemeldet" for the longest time because I didn't have to as a US military dependent.

I, once, got pulled over by a cop and handed him my German driver's license (during that time I WASN'T "gemeldet" in Germany). I didn't have any problems.

So, I don't know what the big deal is of just going to the "Einwohnermeldetamt" to tell them you are moving. I could have used my parent's address to remain "gemeldet" in Germany but I did, in my opinion, the right way by just telling them I am moving to the USA because that's where my residence was going to be.

Nobody claimed it was a big deal. None of this is a big deal. I have 3 friends who have become naturalized USCs, yet continue to use their German passports when visiting Germany. One of them has just renewed it in Germany without problems. Not a big deal either. The members of Bader-Meinhoff said that killing those fascist German and American pigs was not a big deal, and many child molesters claim what they did is no big deal.

How did we get from exploring the better strategy for a US immigrant from talking about big deals and getting away with breaking the law?

I don't like the direction this discussion is going, so I'll stop now participating. All I wanted to explain is that it makes sense to keep a German address. Everyone his own.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

thanks for the many answers....

...

the reason why I still want to be "gemeldet" in Germany is because I have an insurance here, which I can use for the U.S.

...

I just finished my master and I hope I will get a job in the U.S. pretty soon.

Until than I want to keep my German insurance "Auslandsversicherung".

Therefore I think I need to be "gemeldet" in Germany.

Can I let the registration office in Germany know that I don`t live there any more, after I move to the U.S. or do I have to go to the office in person?

You will not be able to do it from the US. You have to go in person, show them your passport (or other ID accepted by Germany) and sign the form in front of the person there.

Shoot for the moon - even if you miss, you'll land among the stars...
