Leaving Vietnam question

Hi, there was some talk awhile back that when you try to leave the Vietnam airport they will want a bribe or something like that. The document they will ask for is some house registry from the police to show you no longer live there or you can give them 20$ or so. My wife will be leaving on Friday morning and I don't know how to explain that to her. Could somebody type it in here in Vietnamise or Cantonise so I can forward it to her? I don't know if she has the document already and I want to make sure she can get threw the airport since I will not be with her.

Thanks

I had read about this happening before too but when my fiancee and I left in January we did not encounter any problems or questions when going through and did not provide anything to them.

She's supposed to go to the local police station (cong an phuong) to remove her name from So Ho Khau (family registry). But if she doesn't want/care to do that, simply slip a $5 inside her passport/Visa. The custom police officer knows she's leaving the country and has money with her. Coffee money, considering it as "li` xi`" for the new year.

Just remember, life over there in VN is NOT real! Your money will be worth a LOT less once you get back over here. Back to reality, cowboy!

Bryon, she does not need anything to leave. Not a Ho Khau and not money. Just tell her that if they start giving her a hard time to stand her ground. The passport control folks don't want undue attention, so it will not last more than a few minutes at most.

1. don't worry about her name on HO KHAU (registration book), because she had gone, her name on this or not is no longer important, if she want to take her name off the list, then the one (head of the household) goes to ward (phuong) to remove it.

2. her CMNN (ID) should be returned at the customs in side the airport, if they forget then you are blessed because you can use it for future visits to vietnam booking hotel or whatever stuff that required id. sum up, it is better to use CMNN than her passport, not worry about pick pocket or stolen, for booking hotel, they charge you less if you're cmnn bearer than "VIET KIEU" passporter.

3. her driver license, same as #2, need it to ride bike for later visits

4. overall, you're worry-free regard vietnamese documents

She is already stressed out enough if they do that at the airport she might lose it and miss the plane. This was all said before and I explained to her not to worry. She has no idea what a bribe or coffee money is. I was just hoping if somebody could type it out in Vietnamise so I could send it to her so she understands before she leaves then we will have less to worry about.

Sorry, I cannot type Vietnamese. But have you try Google translator? Maybe, it will help. On other note, it is a good idea to give them $5 because they can be a pain in the butt. They will ask for document and such. Hide the money inside her passport, and they'll take it.

First, the passport people don't usually ask Vietnamese nationals for money.

Second, she doesn't need to remove her name from Ho Khau. My fiance went to speak to the Ho Khau police, and they told her not to remove her name from the Ho Khau because Vietnam will allow her to keep her citizenship after she becomes a US citizen.

LOL...it's all a "scam" by the airport people to get money out of VN nationals leaving VN. You don't have to go to the phuong and remove your name from the Ho Khau (but you can get a letter or notice of some sort that you've informed them of your departure) <--if everyone starts bring that, I'm sure the airport people will be quite surprised and will have to find another way to get coffee money besides finding "stuff" in your luggage... :P

If your fiancee is nervous, I would recommend her go get that notice that she informed the phuong of her departure, but only because she'll get nervous on the spot and have to end up paying $100USD instead of the $5 or $20... :P
