Newt lying to make a point isn't petty, it's revealing.

That said, it's also an obscure point which most news consumers will simply glaze right over.

The obvious bias of the blogger aside, Newt was going along with a current Republican talking point and must not have vetted the idea himself before he regurgitated it. To be fair, there are political hacks on both parties that will take a talking point as gospel without thinking it through themselves, however, in this case - Newt being considered one of the more intellectual thinkers of the party (as opposed to Palin), he just made himself sound as ridiculous as Palin.

But yes, politicians should never speculate on the outcome of criminal trials before they have actually gone to trial. It would serve them right if the guy got off on the technicality that those comments created an air of prejudice and scuppered any chance of a fair trial. And you'd have to consider that if you're going to use the civilian courts.
