I do but the underprivileged come in every race and color. We should focus on things like kids who grow up in drug infested neighborhoods rather it be the ghetto or the trailer park.

I think the nursing field should be represented by qualified nurses regardless to sex of the individual.

Simpson, we finally agree with one another.

You missed the point all together MC. The point was by giving black people handouts because there black implies that they need help and cant help themselves. So I guess you could say that people who support affirmative action have that sort of mind frame your complaining about but wait you support affirmitive action...hmm

So do you and others with your view go around giving inspirational speeches to the people getting handouts, since you believe so strongly in their capability, unlike us who think they might need help sometimes? I am sure you only have their best interest in mind, and that you think so highly of them.

No, I didn't miss the point. It's empirically correct that Black people are under represented in many of the successful spheres of American life and totally over represented in prisons and inner city ghettos. There are only two ways to explain that. The first is that there are blocks in the path of them achieving this type of success or second that Black people simply are not capable.

Affirmative action was set up to address these imbalances on the assumption that the first was the problem. It's not a perfect way to achieve the desired result, which obviously is genuine equality for all, but something needed to be done and has been done. Unfortunately, this has not been universally successfula nd it probably does need to be rethought. Obviously progress has been made but as I said, unless you believe that black people are simply incapable of achieving the same results as white people, then there are still some road blocks in the way.

I think what Mike is trying to say is that how come someone can't be disadvantage for being White? Theoretically, it is possible but the conditions and circumstances would have to demonstrate that.

I know many who work in colleges here and all unanimously say that those that are black and a single mother receive the largest amount of aid and consideration. So they are all either lying or this is blatant racism at its finest.

The reality in Australia is that those of a poor background are all treated equally, and all qualify for Affirmative Action programs. Sure there is a separate category for Aborigines but that would be the equivalent of having a separate category for American Indians, who bloody deserve Affirmative Action.

Racism is the belief that different races are inherently inferior. Without affirmative action, would blacks be underrepresented in university enrollment? Why is that?

You mean like this:

The other day I realized how racist and blind people have become with the following ad airing for black history month: "Black is beautiful, black is powerful, black is smart, black is unique". Mate, if that is not racism, I honestly don't know what is.

Quite obviously you do not understand the concept of racism, because that simply isn't. There is nothing there that implies that being black is superior or better, it's just a positive statement for black people to feel good about being themselves.

I went to college on 100% financial aid(free), and I am a white gal. My family didn't make much $ so I qualified. It's open to anyone who qualifies. Stop whining, whities. You can go to college for free too if you are poor.

It's wrong to assume that everyone in the ghettos wants to advance and is simply not given the chance. When have not advanced an inch in forty years, when receiving more aid than any other demographic or race, what else needs to be done?

You cannot force anyone to do progressing when they are clearly not interested in doing. all of the resources are there for them, including more funding per student than those in wealthy counties. Ghetto is now a culture. Furthermore, a way of life which is simply not interested in progressing or becoming functional members of society. As I said the other day, it's why even the convenience stores in ghetto areas are owned and operated by foreigners coming from third world countries. Maybe slavery and segregation is also to blame for the total destruction of their areas and the 100 fold crime rates within these ghettos.

Actually, there are lots of programs that target inner city kids, regardless of race.

Without affirmative action minorities are generally underrepresented even at universities with need-blind admissions policies

Federal student aid. FAFSA. Whether that doesn't mean anything because it wasn't private(?), people are trying to say generalizations about who gets aid in colleges.

riiiiight.. You guys always fail to make the connection of replace the above ad with 'white' and then it automatically cries racism. Whereas, keep it black and it's 'empowering'.

Personally, I have no problem with it but don't cry murder when I need an entire century to highlight the accomplishments of Caucasians and Asians that are not related to sport or entertainment.

Who? who exactly is more qualified for help, minorities, woman? I am in a nutshell saying that it is pretty stupid to base ones needs on their color or race. Why is a white kid in a meth infested trailer park any less qualified than a black kid in a crack infested ghetto?
