Blacks continue to be discriminated against because of the color of their skin. I don't why you'd want to remove the historical context of that. Are you looking forward to a date when the Holocaust will be forgotten? Or how the Native Americans were dealt with? Does history ever matter?

Every race is subject to discrimination at one point or another, but affirmative action, quotas, etc are nothing but discrimination at its finest.

It's implying that black people NEED help in succeeding in the world. Perhaps you're the discriminatory one to think that they do, but I think in 2010, with a black president, every race is capable and one doesn't need to be handicapped in order for the other to excel.

Sick of hearing about that too. At the other things did at least happen here.

I don't know why bring up the Holocaust either, I don't see many Jews making excuses for the dire state of their finances/life style/lack of job opportunities/wanting free hand outs due to the Holocaust, just sayin'

History matters of course, I would like to see some expiry date on "excuses" though, it's a little ridiculously out of hand imo.

Scholarships that are awarded to minorities do so to with the intent of helping the disadvantaged, who might otherwise not have the opportunity. The United Negro College Fund, for example. These are private institutions, many of whom are funded from generous outside donors who are aware of their intent.

There are scholarships for children of war veterans, that only cater to them. Are they making an excuse for them?

You do know there are scholarships specifically for Jewish applicants? Why single out scholarships for Black minorities?

i just find it amusing how people beat their drums about AA, even though we have an AA president, yet ignore the real and very current discrimination that occurs with our native americans.

I don't see that just because we now have a president who is half African, who was raised by white grandparents for most of his life, means all issues of discrimination towards African Americans have stopped. If you want to have a passion for native Americans who have been mistreated too, that is a good thing. Help them if you want to. I don't think some people here only care about discrimination when it's against African Americans, it's just the current subject.

Whether I agree with affirmative action anymore or not doesn't go against the fact that people who are descendants of slaves had it extremely hard the first couple generations post slavery. To pretend they could just move up the financial/social ladder of society on their own so easily is ignorant. I agree that nowadays there is more personal responsibility needed to improve one's life, but the reasoning for certain programs was good - helping a people who were slaves and their children and grandchildren, get a better life in a society that exploited them.

God forbid they be based on merit, and not skin color! And don't for one second tell me that many of these race based 'handouts' is done freely and not because of PC pressure from apologists such as yourselves.

If there was a NAAWP, omG, the nation would be up in arms. Mind you, I don't WANT there to be one....but if we're striving to be color BLIND, then that's what we should aim for...not 'oh we're all equal but you get a head start cos you cannot compete any other way'

Shani, I'm a chick ;)

Don't you see the irony that this opinion of yours furthers the notion that blacks are incapable of making it on their own merit?

Nobody gave me a free handout, I'm not disadvantaged because I worked my #### off for everything I have to my name today, all these excuses are all BS and most free handouts cater to the lazy imo and enable them further to be non-contributing members of society. Anyone can work their butts off to study hard and get a loan to go to college and pay it off after college - and a whole lot of people do! It should be all based on Merit, not skin color whatsoever. Some people Choose to take the easy/lazy route and is not interested in academics, I'm saying the smart kid who's academically inclined and has work ethic who otherwise is living in a bad situation at home or cannot afford money for college should get a free scholarship, no matter what skin color.

No, I don't. When someone tries to do something but no one will allow them to, how are they supposed to accomplish it? Isn't is possible that these programs were designed to force society into allowing African Americans to do what they needed to do to make their lives better? Let's not forget they weren't allowed in universities at one time - even though they wanted an education. They weren't allowed to enter certain business - even though they might want to buy something there or find a job. These days it's not as hard, I agree. But 50 years ago it was a very different story- and that is not a very long time ago.
